A 2024 study examined alkaloids isolated from dried Chinese red-headed centipedes and reported anti-inflammatory and anti-renal-fibrosis activity in cell cultures. It did not demonstrate treatment benefit in people, and it does not show that centipede venom, powder, or supplements treat kidney disease.
The findings are early laboratory evidence that may guide further research—not a reason to change kidney care or try centipede products.
What the 2024 study examined
The study, published in the Journal of Natural Products, examined compounds from the Chinese red-headed centipede, Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans. The American Chemical Society reports that researchers extracted compounds from dried centipede powder using ethanol, then separated and identified them.
The researchers reported 12 new quinoline and isoquinoline alkaloids and six additional alkaloids previously detected in this species or in plants. These are chemical findings, not a count of medicines tested in patients.

What activity did the compounds show?
According to the indexed study abstract, the compounds showed these results in laboratory experiments:
| Finding | Compounds reported | Evidence stage |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-inflammatory activity | 1, 8, 10, and 15–18 | Laboratory cell experiments |
| Anti-renal-fibrosis activity | 10 and 16–18 | Cell cultures |
| Potential LAMP2 target for compound 16 | 16 | Target-identification and RNA-interference assays; a mechanistic lead, not a validated treatment target in patients |
Renal fibrosis is kidney scarring associated with progression of some kidney disorders. Activity in cells does not show that a compound reverses scarring or improves kidney function in a person.
Was the active material centipede venom?
No. The study examined alkaloids extracted from dried centipede material. It did not test collected venom, a live centipede, or a commercial centipede preparation as a kidney treatment.
The researchers’ findings support further investigation of isolated compounds. They do not establish a safe dose, clinical benefit, or treatment for people or pets.
Does this change kidney care?
No. The study does not change established chronic kidney disease care. NIDDK describes CKD management as including prescribed medicines, such as medicines to manage blood pressure or glucose when appropriate, with care adjusted as kidney function changes. NIDDK also warns that NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen can damage kidneys, particularly for people with CKD, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
People with kidney disease should check medicines and supplements with their clinician or pharmacist. NIDDK advises people with kidney failure to take over-the-counter nutritional supplements only if their provider recommends them. The centipede study is not evidence that centipede products are safe or effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can centipede venom treat kidney disease?
The 2024 study did not test centipede venom as a kidney treatment. It examined alkaloids extracted from dried centipede material and found activity in cell cultures, not proven benefit in people.
What did the 2024 centipede kidney study find?
Researchers reported 12 new alkaloids and six additional alkaloids, with selected compounds showing anti-inflammatory or anti-renal-fibrosis activity in laboratory experiments. The findings are early research leads.
Best Value
Should I take centipede powder or supplements for kidney disease?
No. The study does not establish that centipede powder or supplements are effective or safe. Ask a clinician or pharmacist before taking supplements, especially if you have kidney disease, and do not replace prescribed care with an unproven product.
What is LAMP2 in the study?
LAMP2 is lysosomal-associated membrane protein 2. The study’s assays implicated it as a potentially important target for compound 16. That is a mechanistic lead from experimental work, not proof of a treatment mechanism in patients.
The bottom line
The study found laboratory leads among alkaloids isolated from dried Chinese red-headed centipedes. It did not show that centipede venom, powder, or a centipede-based medicine treats kidney disease in people or pets.
