Contact a vet promptly if the itching is intense or spreading, the skin is damaged, or your dog seems unwell. Itching alone cannot tell you whether mites are the cause, so don’t start a mite treatment without veterinary guidance.
How soon should you contact a vet?
There is no single wait time that fits every case. Use the severity of the skin problem and your dog’s overall condition to decide how quickly to call.
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| A new skin or coat abnormality, or more scratching, licking, or biting than usual | Arrange a veterinary exam. ASPCA advises seeking an exam as soon as these signs are noticed: ASPCA guidance on skin problems in dogs. |
| Intense or spreading itch, crusts, hair loss, open or oozing sores, or discomfort | Contact your veterinarian promptly. These signs can occur with mange, infection, or other conditions, and they do not identify the cause on their own. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of mange in dogs and Cornell’s sarcoptic mange information. |
| Widespread skin disease, marked lethargy, fever, depression, or reduced appetite | Seek urgent veterinary advice. If your regular clinic is unavailable in an emergency, contact an emergency animal hospital. The FDA explains how to find urgent veterinary help in the United States: FDA guidance on emergency veterinary care. |
| Possible poisoning, overdose, or adverse reaction after a medication or parasite product | Call a veterinarian or animal poison control promptly. ASPCA Poison Control states that it is available 24/7 in the United States; check its official page for current details and fees: ASPCA Animal Poison Control. |
Why itching does not confirm mites
Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Mites and fleas are among the possible causes, alongside allergies and bacterial or fungal infections. Several of these problems can produce similar redness, hair loss, crusting, or sores, so appearance alone is not a reliable way to identify mites. Merck puts it plainly: “Itching is a sign, not a diagnosis or specific disease.” Read its guide to itching in dogs.
A veterinarian can take a history and examine your dog, then decide whether to check skin scrapings or other samples for mites or infection. Sarcoptic mange can be difficult to confirm: mites may not show up in a scraping, so one negative sample does not necessarily rule it out. Cornell notes that sarcoptic mange is an important consideration in itchy dogs, especially when treatment for other itchy conditions has not worked adequately; see Cornell’s overview.

What mange can look like—and when it is more serious
Mange may cause sudden, intense itching, redness, hair loss, crusts, and sores. Scratching can further damage the skin, and damaged areas may develop bacterial or yeast infections. These signs warrant veterinary assessment; they are not proof that mites are responsible.
Severe, generalized disease can affect more than the skin. Merck lists lethargy, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and deep pus-filled skin inflammation among possible signs of severe generalized demodicosis. Cornell describes depression, reduced appetite, and weight loss in severe sarcoptic mange. If skin problems occur with these kinds of whole-body changes, seek urgent advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Can mites spread to other pets or people?
Transmission depends on the mite condition. Sarcoptic mange can spread between dogs through direct contact and contaminated environments such as kennels or grooming facilities; people and other animals may also be transiently affected. Walking dandruff is highly contagious, particularly in households with multiple pets. Other mite conditions do not necessarily spread in the same way. Merck’s mange overview and Cornell’s sarcoptic mange guidance discuss these risks.
If mange is suspected, limit close exposure where feasible while you contact your veterinarian. Ask whether other pets need assessment and how to handle bedding, grooming tools, or other potentially contaminated items. Temporary skin irritation in a person after contact is a reason to seek appropriate medical advice; it does not establish which mite, if any, is involved.

Why you should not guess at a home treatment
Treatment depends on the cause, the mite involved, and your dog’s condition. A product intended for one skin problem may not address another, and ASPCA warns that some skin treatments can be toxic to dogs. Avoid using human creams or starting an over-the-counter mite remedy unless your veterinarian directs you to do so. The FDA likewise advises owners to seek pet-specific guidance from their veterinarian: FDA information for pet owners.
Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve prescribed anti-mite medication, treatment for a secondary infection, or environmental measures. A veterinarian can recommend the right approach after evaluating the dog; there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for an itchy dog.
