It depends on where you live and what is happening. In an Ontario ownership dispute, the College of Veterinarians of Ontario says a veterinarian does not have authority to seize or keep the animal. That guidance is not a universal rule: local law may give animal-welfare inspectors or other officials seizure powers, and emergency treatment, reporting a concern, and formally taking custody are separate actions.
First, find out what “take my cat away” means
A clinic may be talking about very different things: treating your cat without reaching you in an emergency, reporting a welfare concern, delaying non-emergency treatment while ownership is unclear, or an official taking custody under local law. A vet’s involvement in one of these situations does not by itself establish that the vet can legally seize or keep your cat.

- Emergency treatment: In some jurisdictions, rules allow limited care without consent if delay risks serious harm.
- A welfare report: A veterinarian may have a duty to alert an authority when there are reasonable grounds to suspect abuse or neglect.
- Seizure or custody: This may be a power assigned by law to an inspector or another official, rather than an independent power of the veterinarian.
What the rules say in specific places
The applicable law depends on your location. These examples illustrate why a single yes-or-no answer would be misleading; they are not a substitute for checking the rules where you live.

The College’s informed-consent guide also says veterinarians must report to a provincial animal-welfare inspector when they have reasonable grounds to believe an animal is being abused, neglected, or subjected to undue hardship. United Kingdom
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ professional guidance says consent should be obtained unless delay would adversely affect animal welfare, such as in an emergency. It also says a vet should consider alerting authorities if someone removes an animal against veterinary advice while welfare concerns remain. This is professional guidance; it does not establish a universal power for a vet to seize an animal. See RCVS communication and consent guidance.
Nevada, United States
Nevada’s veterinary regulation allows specified essential services without informed consent in an emergency when they are necessary to save a life or relieve suffering. That emergency-care rule does not itself create a general seizure power. See Nevada Administrative Code, Chapter 638.

Queensland, Australia
Queensland’s Animal Care and Protection Act gives inspectors powers to seize animals in specified circumstances, including some situations involving imminent welfare risks. This is an example of statutory authority assigned to officials, not proof that a veterinarian has an independent power to take a cat. See the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

Ownership evidence can affect who is authorized to consent to treatment. Ontario regulator guidance points to documents such as a bill of sale or registration papers when legal authority is unclear. Contact the clinic promptly and ask what documentation it needs; do not assume that a disagreement between people gives the veterinarian the right to decide ownership. In Ontario, the College says non-emergency treatment may be postponed while ownership is clarified, subject to the need to prevent suffering in an emergency.

What to do if someone says your cat will be removed
- Ask what action is being taken. Is the clinic providing emergency treatment, making a report, keeping the cat temporarily under a particular law, or saying an authority has formally taken custody?
- Ask who is responsible and on what basis. Request the name of the agency or official involved and the law or written notice being relied on.
- Clarify consent and next steps. If treatment is underway, ask what care is being provided now and when the clinic will seek your consent for further treatment.
- Provide relevant records. Share ownership documents and, if someone else may act for you, information showing that person’s authorization.
- Contact the authority named in any notice. If the action is disputed or its legal basis is unclear, contact the relevant local animal-welfare agency or a lawyer in your jurisdiction.
You can ask the clinic directly: “Are you treating my cat, reporting a concern, or saying an authority has formally taken custody?” You can also request the decision and next steps in writing. These questions help distinguish the clinic’s role from an official action; they do not replace local legal advice.
