A fishbowl is not a suitable long-term habitat for a betta. Choose an aquarium with enough swimming space, gentle filtration, stable warm water, and safe places to explore and hide. Care sources differ on the minimum volume: the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine recommends five gallons or larger, while the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) advises at least 20 litres for a single male betta.
Why isn’t a fishbowl suitable for a betta?
A bowl generally does not provide the space and equipment needed to maintain stable water conditions and support normal swimming and hiding behaviour. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine says bettas should not live in bowls and recommends an aquarium of five gallons or larger. OATA also advises a proper aquarium, noting that larger volumes help keep temperature and water quality more stable.

A 2024 study by Rebecca G. Oldfield and Emily K. Murphy compared male bettas in aquaria of 10, 38, 208, and 378 litres. Fish in enriched environments swam more; in larger aquaria, they showed fewer approaches and aggressive displays and more bouts of foraging. The authors also reported that small fishbowls commonly used in pet stores suppress swimming behaviour. The study does not establish a single tank size that guarantees health or peaceful cohabitation.
How big of a tank does a betta need?
There is no single agreed minimum in the cited recommendations. Their figures come from different kinds of guidance and should not be treated as interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)

When choosing an aquarium, consider more than its stated capacity. Leave usable swimming room after adding furnishings, make sure you can fit a heater and gentle filter, and choose a setup where you can check temperature and water quality. Keep the surface accessible: bettas can breathe atmospheric air there.
Do betta fish need a filter and heater?
Choose gentle filtration
Yes, filtration is important, but the flow should be gentle. The University of Illinois guidance warns that strong suction can injure a betta’s delicate fins and recommends low flow; OATA describes a filter as essential. Check that the fish can swim comfortably without being pushed around by the current.

Keep the water warm and steady
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine gives a temperature range of 76–81°F and recommends measuring the water with a thermometer. It notes that most homes need an in-tank heater. OATA says a heater is required to maintain a suitable temperature year-round and advises keeping the aquarium away from drafts and heat sources that cause fluctuations.

How should you prepare the aquarium?
Set up and cycle the aquarium before bringing the fish home. CDC advises learning about tank cycling and preparing the habitat before adding fish; OATA likewise recommends cycling in advance. Routine testing helps you check water conditions rather than relying on appearance alone.

- Set up the aquarium and equipment. Install the filter and heater, and place the tank away from drafts or heat sources that could cause temperature swings.
- Prepare tap water appropriately. Tap water may contain chlorine or chloramine. The University of Illinois guidance recommends a dechlorinating product when using tap water and says to test for heavy metals; OATA lists water conditioner among aquarium supplies.
- Cycle the aquarium before adding the betta. Follow guidance for cycling a new tank, then use a freshwater test kit and continue routine water testing.
- Check the temperature. Use a thermometer to confirm that the water remains in the suitable range before introducing the fish and monitor it afterward.
What furnishings and tank mates are suitable?
Provide cover without sacrificing swimming space
Use plants or other safe cover, and leave room for the fish to swim. OATA recommends substrate and plants or suitable ornaments. Avoid sharp or rough surfaces that may damage fins, and do not crowd the aquarium with decorations. Keep access to the water surface clear.
Do not house two male bettas together
Male bettas are territorial. The University of Illinois guidance and CDC warn that they may fight, and the 2024 behavioural study found that even very large aquaria cannot assure peaceful cohabitation between two males. A larger or enriched tank is not a guarantee of compatibility. Before considering other species in a community aquarium, check species-specific compatibility and whether the tank has sufficient capacity and filtration.

How should you feed a betta?
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes bettas as carnivores and recommends balanced pelleted or flaked food daily. Its guidance is to offer an amount the fish consumes within three to five minutes, avoid or remove leftovers that can worsen water quality, and give high-protein treats such as bloodworms or brine shrimp in moderation. Treat this as that veterinary source’s feeding guidance, not a precise universal ration.
