Most tetras do well at 75–80°F (about 24–27°C), according to Aqueon, but there is no single ideal temperature for every tetra species. PetMD and Petco give a broader general range of 72–82°F (about 22–28°C). Identify your tetra and use species-specific care guidance to choose a target within its needs.

How the recommended ranges compare

General tetra care guides do not give exactly the same range. Their figures are broad guidance for tetras as a group, not a guarantee that every species will thrive throughout the full span.

Source General temperature guidance Qualification
Aqueon, “Tetras Care Guide” 75–80°F (about 24–27°C) Applies to “most tetras”; the guide notes that Buenos Aires tetras do better in cooler water. No publication date is stated.
PetMD, “Tetra Fish Care: Complete Care Sheet for Beginners” 72–82°F (about 22–28°C) A general range in a veterinarian-authored care sheet by Maria Zayas, DVM, published April 28, 2026; it notes that care depends on species.
Petco, “Tetra Fish Care Guide: Tank Setup, Food & Compatibility” 72–82°F (about 22–28°C) A broad general range; the page credits Petco’s Animal Care, Education and Compliance Team and does not state a publication date.

Do not average the ranges into a supposedly precise universal optimum. Aqueon’s guidance also notes that cardinals, emperors, and penguin tetras can be more challenging and do best in well-established aquariums with softer, more acidic water—another reason to look up care for the fish you actually have rather than relying on the word “tetra” alone.

How to choose a temperature for your tetra

  1. Identify the species. Check the fish’s label or ask the seller for its exact species name. A broad tetra care range is a starting point, not a substitute for species-specific guidance.
  2. Set a species-appropriate target. Compare the guidance for that species with your aquarium’s measured temperature. Do not assume that every temperature in a broad group range suits every tetra.
  3. Check the tank with an aquarium thermometer. PetMD recommends checking the temperature daily. A thermostat-equipped aquarium heater can help maintain the chosen target when heating is needed.

Keep the temperature stable

PetMD warns that temperature fluctuations greater than ±2°F within 24 hours can stress fish; Petco likewise cautions against swings greater than 2°F in either direction over a 24-hour period. Use the thermometer to notice changes rather than relying on room temperature or a heater setting alone.

  • ★LED Digital Display & External Temperature Controller: LED digital display can observe the water temperature in real time; the temperature remote control allows you to avoid wet hands when adjusting the temperature. Note: Please unplug the power when cleaning the fish tank or changing the water in the aquarium.

When adding replacement water, bring it to the same temperature as the aquarium water before adding it. PetMD also recommends routine water-quality testing for pH, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite: temperature control is one part of aquarium care, not a replacement for checking water quality.

Do you need an aquarium heater?

Not necessarily. Aqueon recommends a heater when the aquarium is in a room below 75°F, while PetMD recommends a thermostatic heater to maintain the selected range. Whether your setup needs one depends on the tetra’s target temperature and the aquarium’s actual readings. If you use a heater, choose one with a thermostat and verify the resulting tank temperature with a thermometer.
