Sometimes, but bettas and guppies are not dependable tank mates. Some bettas may tolerate other fish, and general care guidance includes livebearers as possible companions. A species-specific betta profile, however, recommends keeping bettas alone and says tolerance of other species is the exception. Treat a betta–guppy pairing as an individual gamble, not a reliably compatible combination, and only attempt it if you can separate the fish.
Why the advice on bettas and guppies differs
Aqueon’s 2019 Betta Care Guide says bettas can live with other fish in a peaceful community aquarium of 15 gallons or larger. It includes livebearers among possible companions, but does not specifically test or endorse guppies with bettas. Guppies are livebearers, so the broad guidance makes the pairing possible—not assured.

Seriously Fish takes a more cautious, species-specific position in its Betta splendens profile: it recommends keeping the fish alone and notes that some individuals tolerate other species, but that this is exceptional. Its guppy profile describes guppies as peaceful community fish; that does not establish that they are safe around a territorial betta.

What tank conditions can—and cannot—solve
Space
Aqueon’s 15-gallon-or-larger figure refers to a peaceful betta community aquarium in its 2019 guide. It is not a guarantee of compatibility or a universal minimum for every setup. Any community tank also needs adequate room for every fish’s adult size, activity and social needs.

Temperature
Aqueon recommends 76–85°F for bettas. Seriously Fish gives guppies a range of 17–28°C, approximately 63–82°F. The ranges overlap from 76–82°F, but that conversion-based overlap does not show that every guppy strain or betta thrives at every temperature in that span. An adjustable aquarium heater can help maintain a chosen temperature; it cannot prevent aggression.
Water chemistry
Temperature overlap is not full water-chemistry compatibility. Seriously Fish lists guppies at pH 7.0–8.5 and hardness 8–30 dGH, and describes them as hard-water fish that should be kept long term in moderately hard or harder water. Consider water chemistry alongside temperature rather than choosing a shared temperature and assuming the setup suits both species.

Why a successful pairing cannot be predicted
The cited sources provide no success rate or controlled, pair-specific study for bettas and guppies. They also do not establish that a particular sex, color, tail type or introduction method guarantees success. Temperament, fin-nipping risk, adult size, activity, water conditions and available space are practical factors to consider, not proven predictors of a successful pairing.

Other companions to consider
Aqueon’s general betta guidance also names tetras, rasboras and Corydoras, while its betta guide suggests gentle bottom-dwelling options such as kuhli loaches and Corydoras, plus snails and ghost shrimp. These are examples, not a universal stocking plan. Check each species’ water and space requirements; Aqueon notes that Corydoras need to be kept in groups, which affects tank capacity.
