Why bichirs can breathe air—but still need prompt help

A fish may be capable of breathing air and still be at risk when it is exposed, especially if its surroundings become dry.

The spiracles are also important in an evolutionary context. Scripps’ account quotes paleontologist John Long explaining that the spiracular canal was used for breathing in ancient fishes and early tetrapod ancestors before fully terrestrial animals no longer needed it. That history helps explain why a bichir has an unusual ability among aquarium fish, but it says nothing about a safe household escape duration.
How long can a bichir survive out of water?
No reliable maximum duration is established for a bichir stranded on an ordinary dry household surface. The available sources do not support a promise of “hours,” a full day, or any other specific wait time for an escaped aquarium fish. The safest practical answer is to treat the escape as urgent and return the fish to its established aquarium as soon as possible.

Once a fish’s body surface dries, the conditions are no longer comparable to the profile’s wording. Why a month-long laboratory exposure is not a safe waiting period
A 2026 study of Senegal bichirs (Polypterus senegalus) examined homeostatic changes under experimental terrestrial conditions. Its methods describe a terrestrial treatment lasting at least one month. That duration can sound reassuring when taken out of context, but the study did not leave fish on a dry surface: water was continuously supplied at approximately 1 mm depth, and foggers were used to prevent the fish’s upper and lower surfaces from drying.
That carefully maintained setup differs fundamentally from an accidental escape into a room. It demonstrates that researchers studied adaptation in a controlled, persistently moist terrestrial environment; it does not establish that a pet bichir can safely remain out of water for a month, or for any particular period on a dry floor. The study concerned P. senegalus, while Marwell’s qualitative statement concerns P. delhezi. Neither source supplies a dry-stranding survival limit.
