Yes, birds can kill people under particular conditions, but they are not humanity’s general-purpose deadly foes. The meaningful hazards fall into three different pathways: infection after close or unprotected exposure, rare physical attacks, and bird strikes involving aircraft. Those pathways differ radically in frequency, severity and prevention. For the general public, the current international assessment of H5 avian-influenza risk is low; aviation strikes are a documented operational hazard, while fatal attacks by birds are exceptional and lack a reliable worldwide death count.
What “dangerous birds” actually means
Calling birds dangerous without describing the situation hides more than it explains. A person handling a sick poultry flock faces a different risk from a passenger on a jet, and neither is comparable with someone surprised by a large flightless bird. The useful questions are: What is the exposure route? How often does it happen? How severe can the outcome be? and Can the risk be controlled?

| Hazard | Typical route | What the evidence shows | Main controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avian influenza and other infections | Close, unprotected contact with infected birds, animals, droppings or contaminated environments | Human infections are uncommon; H5N1 can nevertheless be severe or fatal | Avoid contact, use appropriate protection, wash hands, and follow public-health instructions |
| Direct attack | Pecking, clawing, kicking or collisions with a defensive bird | Can cause serious trauma in a rare encounter; no authoritative global annual death total exists | Keep distance, do not corner or feed aggressive wildlife, and leave an escape route |
| Bird strike | Bird colliding with an aircraft or being ingested by an engine | Frequent enough to require a dedicated aviation reporting and mitigation system; a small minority are catastrophic | Airport wildlife management, strike reporting, flight procedures and aircraft design |
Can bird flu kill people?
It can. H5N1 disease has ranged from no symptoms or mild illness to severe pneumonia, organ failure and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 925 human H5N1 infections and an approximately 50% case-fatality proportion from 1997 onward in its 2024 summary. That proportion describes identified cases, not the risk faced by every person who sees a bird; people with mild or asymptomatic infection may be missed, and exposure patterns differ greatly.
Human infection remains unusual. The CDC describes avian-influenza infections as uncommon and sporadic in many countries, usually following unprotected exposure. Risk is concentrated among people who handle infected poultry or wild birds, work in contaminated settings, or have frequent occupational contact. Ordinary outdoor birdwatching, viewed from a sensible distance, is not inherently dangerous.

What happened in the first major H5N1 outbreak?
In Hong Kong in 1997, 18 confirmed H5N1 infections included six deaths, according to a CDC historical chart updated in 2026. That event demonstrated that an avian virus can infect people and cause severe disease, but it does not mean that every wild bird or every encounter carries the same hazard.
How public-health agencies rate the current risk
A joint assessment by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health dated 18 May 2026 assessed the global public-health risk from Gs/Gd-like highly pathogenic avian-influenza A(H5) viruses as low. For people with occupational or frequent exposure, the assessment ranges from low to moderate depending on local conditions and the protections in use. A low population-level assessment and a potentially severe illness are not contradictory: the outcome can be serious when infection occurs, while the chance of infection for the general public remains small.
How infection happens and how to reduce it
Transmission depends on the bird or mammal involved, the virus strain, the amount of contaminated material, the route into the body and the duration of contact. The most concerning situations include touching a sick or dead bird with bare hands, cleaning a contaminated enclosure without protection, or getting secretions into the eyes, nose or mouth.

- Do not handle visibly sick or dead wild birds. Keep children and pets away and contact the relevant wildlife or health authority for local instructions.
- If contact is unavoidable, use the protection specified by authorities. Gloves, eye protection and respiratory protection may be required for high-risk work; protection should match the setting rather than be improvised.
- Wash hands thoroughly after any contact. Clean clothing, tools and surfaces that may have been contaminated, and avoid touching your face while working.
- Seek medical advice promptly after a significant exposure. Tell the clinician what animal you contacted, when the contact occurred and whether protection was used. Fever, cough, breathing difficulty, eye inflammation or other illness after exposure warrants urgent guidance.
Other bird-associated infections
H5N1 receives attention because of its potential severity, but it is not the only illness associated with birds. The CDC lists psittacosis, caused by a bacterium often associated with parrots and other captive birds, and cryptococcosis, a fungal infection that can be linked to environmental material contaminated by bird droppings. Risk depends on the species, pathogen, dose and exposure conditions, not simply on the presence of a bird.
For companion birds, routine veterinary care helps detect illness and maintain hygienic housing. Clean cages in a way that limits dust and aerosolization, follow the veterinarian’s instructions, and tell the clinic about human symptoms if several people in the household become ill. A healthy pet kept in a clean environment is not equivalent to an uncontrolled exposure to a diseased flock.
Can a bird attack and kill a person?
A large bird can inflict life-threatening trauma with a beak, talons or powerful legs, and a fall caused by an attack can be as dangerous as the initial wound. Defensive behavior is most likely when a bird is cornered, nesting, guarding chicks or habituated to people. However, no authoritative global annual count of deaths from direct bird attacks is available, so it is not possible to rank species by a defensible worldwide death toll.

The “most dangerous bird” question
Large flightless birds such as cassowaries and ostriches are capable of severe kicks, and raptors can cause deep puncture wounds. Those facts establish capability, not a global ranking. Anecdotes about one species are not a substitute for comparable international records, and the available evidence does not support naming a single “world’s most dangerous bird.” A species’ behavior, the individual animal, the setting and the person’s response matter more than a sensational label.

- Stop advancing and give the bird a clear route away from you.
- Do not chase, grab, photograph at close range or interfere with a nest or chicks.
- Place a solid object between yourself and the bird while backing away slowly; do not turn a retreat into a run if that provokes pursuit.
- After a bite, scratch or kick, control bleeding, wash the wound with soap and running water, and obtain medical care for deep injuries, eye wounds or signs of infection.
- Report repeated aggressive behavior to local wildlife officials rather than attempting to capture the bird yourself.
Can a bird strike bring down a plane?
Yes. A bird strike can damage a windshield, pierce a flight surface or be ingested by an engine. The Federal Aviation Administration recorded about 344,000 wildlife strikes involving U.S. civil aircraft from 1990 through 2025. Those reports included 384 human injuries in U.S. civil aviation. Worldwide over the same period, the FAA records more than 655 people killed and over 350 civil and military aircraft destroyed by wildlife strikes. Most reported strikes do not produce fatalities, but the rare catastrophic events justify extensive airport controls.
Where and when the risk is concentrated
About 61% of fixed-wing strikes occur during landing phases, and about 70% occur below 500 feet, according to FAA operational data. The danger is therefore concentrated around takeoff, approach and landing, where aircraft are close to bird habitat and have less time or altitude to recover from damage. Bird abundance, body mass and engine ingestion all influence the consequences.

Documented disasters and the financial cost
| Event or measure | FAA figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Air Lines Flight 375 | 62 deaths | Major bird-strike disaster in 1960 |
| Jeju Air Flight 2216 | 179 deaths | Major bird-strike disaster in 2024 |
| Average projected U.S. civil-aviation cost | About $272 million per year | Average annual projection for 1990–2025 |
The FAA summarizes the broader record plainly: wildlife-aircraft strikes over the past century have caused hundreds of deaths worldwide and billions of dollars in aircraft damage. The figures include more than birds, because the aviation database covers wildlife strikes, but birds account for the overwhelming operational concern discussed by airport programs.
How airports reduce strikes
Airports manage habitat and food sources that attract flocking birds, monitor wildlife movement, disperse birds before aircraft movements, and record strikes so recurring trouble spots can be addressed. Pilots and air-traffic personnel use procedures designed for the high-risk phases of flight, while aircraft and engines are certified against specified bird-impact conditions. These layers reduce risk; they cannot make a busy airport completely bird-free.
Which bird hazard is most dangerous?
There is no single answer because the denominators differ. Bird-borne infection produces sporadic human cases but can be medically severe. Direct attacks are exceptionally rare in the available evidence, although an individual encounter can be deadly. Bird strikes are numerous—enough for hundreds of thousands of reports—but only a small fraction cause human injury or a fatal crash.

| Question | Infection | Direct attack | Aircraft strike |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is most exposed? | People handling infected animals or contaminated material | People approaching defensive or habituated large birds | Aircraft crews and passengers during airport operations |
| Worst credible outcome | Severe pneumonia, organ failure or death | Major trauma, blood loss or a fatal fall | Multiple injuries or a fatal crash |
| How often is the hazard recorded? | Uncommon human infections | No reliable global annual total | About 344,000 U.S. civil-aircraft wildlife strikes, 1990–2025 |
| Most effective prevention | Protection, hygiene and avoiding sick or dead animals | Distance and non-interference | Airport wildlife management and flight-safety procedures |
Humans are a larger threat to birds than birds are to people
The direction of danger is often reversed. A U.S. Geological Survey report estimated approximately 196 million human-caused bird deaths each year in the continental United States in the early 1970s. In that estimate, hunting accounted for about 61% of human-related deaths and collisions with man-made objects about 32%. The figures are historical, not a current global total, but they illustrate the scale difference between ordinary human impacts on birds and fatal bird incidents involving people.
That comparison does not erase legitimate safety concerns. It puts them in proportion: a rare attack, an uncommon infection and a low-probability aviation catastrophe are real hazards, while human activity can kill birds on a vastly larger scale.
A practical decision rule
- Watching birds at a distance: ordinary observation is generally low risk; avoid touching wildlife and wash hands before eating.
- Finding a dead or sick bird: do not handle it bare-handed; keep people and pets away and follow local reporting guidance.
- Keeping pet birds: maintain veterinary care, cage hygiene and ventilation, and seek advice if the bird or a household member is ill.
- Working with poultry or wildlife: use the occupational protections required by local health authorities and report unusual illness or mortality.
- Flying near bird concentrations: rely on airport wildlife programs, pilot procedures and crew instructions; passengers should remain seated and belted during takeoff and landing.
- Facing an aggressive bird: create distance, protect your head and eyes, and do not corner or provoke the animal.
Birds can therefore be lethal in specific circumstances, but the evidence does not support portraying them as humanity’s deadly enemies. The sensible response is targeted prevention for the exposure you actually face, not fear of birds as a class.
