Can Black Walnut Shavings Cause Laminitis in Horses? Safety, Signs, and What to Do

Black walnut bedding is linked to rapid-onset equine laminitis. Learn which residues to avoid, what signs require an immediate veterinarian call, and how to manage pasture trees and fallen walnuts when the risk is less certain.

Do not use black walnut (Juglans nigra) shavings or sawdust as bedding for horses. Laminitis has been reported within hours of exposure, and Ontario guidance specifically warns about material from furniture factories and sawmills unless black walnut shavings are kept completely separate from other species. If a horse develops foot soreness, reluctance to move, limb swelling or unusually fast breathing after possible exposure, call a veterinarian immediately.

The hazard associated with contaminated bedding is well documented, but the exact toxin and the natural route into the horse are still unresolved. A standing black walnut tree in a pasture is therefore not equivalent to a stall bed made from black walnut residue; pasture risk is less clearly defined and calls for sensible precautions rather than assumptions.

What counts as black walnut wood residue?

Black walnut residue includes planer shavings, sawdust, chips and mixed shop waste produced when Juglans nigra logs, boards or branches are cut, milled, sanded or turned. The material may look like ordinary wood bedding, especially after it has been mixed with pine, spruce, hardwood or recycled stall material. That appearance is not a safety test.

Residue from a furniture plant, cabinet shop, sawmill, tree-removal job or home workshop can be difficult to identify once it enters a bedding pile. Fine sawdust is particularly easy to distribute through a barn, trailer or manure area. A load described only as “hardwood shavings” should not be assumed to be free of black walnut unless the supplier can document the species and segregation practices.

Black walnut is different from a manufactured bedding product that merely has a dark color or walnut-like smell. The concern is the actual wood residue and contamination with it. The safest purchasing rule is to use bedding from a source that identifies the wood species and keeps black walnut out of the production stream.

Can black walnut wood shavings be used as bedding for horses or other livestock?

No. Black walnut shavings and sawdust should not be used as horse bedding. Extension Horses and the Government of Ontario both advise avoiding the material. Ontario’s guidance specifically cautions against shavings from furniture factories and sawmills unless black walnut can be kept separate from all other shavings. That qualification matters because a small amount of contaminated residue may be hard to detect after mixing.

Why bedding is the clearest danger

Documented cases involve horses standing on or otherwise contacting black walnut shavings. A stall bed creates prolonged, close exposure and can spread residue onto wet hooves, bedding dust, legs and feeding areas. The practical association is strong enough that avoidance is recommended even though scientists have not identified a single confirmed toxin or proved the ordinary natural route of exposure.

How fast can illness appear?

Evidence Reported interval How to interpret it
Extension Horses (2019) 8 to 24 hours after contact with black walnut shavings A reported field interval, not a guarantee that every horse follows the same schedule
Uhlinger, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (1989) 8 to 12 hours in a ten-horse stable report Clinical observations from one affected stable
Minnick et al., Veterinary and Human Toxicology (1987) Eight of 10 horses developed Obel grade 3 or 4 laminitis within 12 hours Experimental oral administration of aqueous heartwood extract; not ordinary bedding contact
Galey et al., Journal of Comparative Pathology (1991) 12 horses developed laminitis within 8 to 12 hours Experimental nasogastric dosing with aqueous black walnut extract

Because signs can develop during the same day, waiting to see whether a horse “gets over it” is unsafe after a credible exposure. A horse may look normal when first moved onto contaminated bedding and deteriorate later.

How to recognize possible black-walnut-associated laminitis

Reported clinical signs include moderate to severe laminitis, foot soreness, reluctance to walk, limb edema and a rapid respiratory rate. Extension Horses also describes depression and possible breathing difficulty. These signs are not unique to black walnut exposure, so they cannot establish the cause by themselves; they do indicate a veterinary emergency when they follow a possible bedding exposure.

Signs to check immediately

  • Short, careful steps or refusal to move.
  • Obvious foot pain or a horse shifting weight repeatedly.
  • Swelling (edema) in one or more limbs.
  • Breathing faster than expected for the horse’s activity and environment.
  • Depression, reduced responsiveness or apparent breathing difficulty.
  • Sudden worsening over several hours after a new load of bedding was installed.

What to do when signs appear

  1. Call a veterinarian immediately. Tell the clinic that black walnut shavings or sawdust may be involved, when the horse was exposed and when the first sign appeared.
  2. Remove the horse from the suspected material. Move it to a clean, known-safe area without scattering the contaminated bedding into another stall or paddock.
  3. Stop using the entire questionable batch. Isolate bags, bales, wheelbarrows and loose piles so other horses cannot contact them.
  4. Record the timeline. Note the supplier, wood species listed on the invoice, time bedding was placed, horses affected and any changes in breathing, movement or swelling.
  5. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions. This information is an exposure warning, not a diagnosis or a substitute for an individual treatment plan.

Do not wait for a hoof-temperature check, a visible change in the hoof wall or a more dramatic posture before calling. The reported onset window is short, and early professional assessment is the appropriate response.

Is juglone the toxin?

Juglone is often mentioned because it is a compound associated with walnut trees, but it should not be presented as the proven cause of bedding-related laminitis. Extension guidance states that the toxin causing equine laminitis has not been clearly identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the experiments show

Study or guidance Exposure tested Finding relevant to the mechanism
True and Lowe (1980) Topical juglone and large oral doses Topical application caused local skin irritation but did not cause laminitis; large oral doses produced inconsistent, mild signs
Minnick et al. (1987) Aqueous black walnut heartwood extract given orally Laminitis occurred in eight of 10 horses; juglone was not detected in the extract, and the authors concluded the active ingredient was not juglone
Ontario government guidance Experimental application of shavings or juglone to the feet Researchers were unsuccessful in reproducing laminitis by that topical method, while oral aqueous heartwood extracts have induced the syndrome

These findings rule out an overly simple explanation in which juglone is absorbed through the sole and automatically causes laminitis. The clinical bedding association remains the basis for prevention, while the responsible compound and natural exposure route remain uncertain. Avoidance is justified by the observed outcome, not by a claim that one mechanism has been conclusively proven.

How concerned should you be about horses standing under a black walnut tree?

The risk from an intact tree used for shade is less clearly established than the risk from contaminated bedding. An Extension expert response says the pasture risk level for horses standing under a tree, walking among leaves or grazing nearby has not been clearly defined. That uncertainty does not make the tree harmless, but it does mean that a standing tree should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a stall full of black walnut shavings.

Exposure setting Evidence level Practical approach
Fresh black walnut shavings or sawdust used as bedding Documented association with rapid-onset laminitis cases Do not use; remove horses and isolate the material if contamination is suspected
Horse standing under an intact tree for shade Risk not clearly defined by available guidance Use precautionary access management, especially where roots, nuts or branches are reachable
Fallen leaves, branches and walnuts in a paddock Potential exposure, with specific concern about ingestion and mold Remove debris, limit access and monitor the area during seasonal leaf fall
Shavings and sawdust generated by tree removal Residue can recreate the bedding concern Keep horses away and remove all resulting shavings and sawdust

Practical pasture precautions

  • Fence around exposed roots or otherwise limit access where horses chew, paw or graze beneath the tree.
  • Collect fallen walnuts and branches rather than allowing them to accumulate.
  • Prune reachable branches when doing so can be done safely and legally.
  • Consider moving horses during heavy leaf fall or when little alternative forage is available.
  • Inspect the ground after storms, mowing or tree work, when fresh debris may appear.

Moldy fallen walnuts deserve special attention. Ontario guidance notes that they may contain penitrem A, a neurotoxin capable of poisoning livestock and other animals if ingested. Keep nuts inaccessible and contact a veterinarian promptly if a horse may have eaten them or develops neurologic or other illness.

What if a black walnut tree is removed?

Tree removal can create a new, concentrated source of residue. The Extension guidance advises removing all shavings associated with removal. Do not leave a chip pile, stump-grinding material or sawdust where horses can bed, roll, forage or drink nearby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep horses out of the work area before cutting begins.
  2. Arrange for chips and sawdust to be collected rather than blown across a pasture.
  3. Remove piles, sweep or vacuum fine residue from hard surfaces and inspect adjacent fencing and feeders.
  4. Do not transport the material to stalls, run-in sheds or manure areas used by horses.
  5. Reopen the area only after visible residue and loose branches have been removed and the footing has been checked.

Because the causal agent is unresolved, there is no reliable “safe waiting period” that can be calculated from the date of cutting. Physical removal and prevention of contact are more dependable than trying to age the residue until it seems harmless.

Preventing accidental contamination in a barn

Before buying bedding

  • Ask which tree species are processed in the mill or shop.
  • Obtain written confirmation that black walnut is excluded or kept in a separate production and storage stream.
  • Be cautious with mixed hardwood loads, workshop sweepings and unlabelled shavings.
  • Keep invoices, lot numbers and delivery dates so a questionable load can be traced.

When bedding is delivered

  • Inspect the load before it enters the barn, but do not rely on color or smell to identify species.
  • Store new material away from feed, water buckets and clean bedding until its source is verified.
  • Train every person who handles bedding to recognize “hardwood,” “shop mix” and “sawmill waste” as questions requiring clarification, not as safety assurances.
  • Never blend a suspect load into an otherwise acceptable pile; mixing makes removal and exposure tracing harder.

If contamination is discovered

Stop distributing the material, move horses to clean bedding, label and isolate the remaining stock, and contact the supplier. Clean tools and carts that carried the residue before they are used elsewhere. Monitor exposed horses closely for at least the first day because reported signs can begin 8 to 24 hours after contact, and seek veterinary advice immediately if any concerning change appears.

Decision guide for horse owners

Situation Recommended decision Reason
Supplier confirms black walnut shavings Reject the load Black walnut bedding is specifically advised against
Species of a mixed hardwood load cannot be verified Do not place it in horse stalls until the source is clarified Contamination may be invisible after mixing
Horse is normal but stood on suspected bedding Remove the source, document exposure and monitor closely; call the veterinarian for case-specific advice Signs may be delayed for several hours
Horse shows soreness, swelling or rapid breathing after exposure Call a veterinarian immediately These are reported signs of potentially serious illness
Black walnut tree is present in a pasture Reduce access to roots, nuts and branches and manage seasonal debris Pasture risk is uncertain, while ingestion and residue hazards are plausible
Tree is being cut down near horses Exclude horses and remove all chips and sawdust Removal can create concentrated black walnut residue

Bottom line for barns and pastures

Black walnut shavings and sawdust are not appropriate horse bedding, regardless of whether the material came from a furniture shop, sawmill or tree-removal project. Laminitis has been reported as soon as 8 to 12 hours in some cases and within 8 to 24 hours in extension guidance. The toxin has not been clearly identified, and juglone is not a proven explanation, but that uncertainty is not a reason to experiment with exposure.

A live black walnut tree presents a different and less-defined question. Keep horses away from reachable roots, fallen nuts and branches, manage leaf-fall debris, and prevent access to chips or sawdust after tree work. At the first sign of possible laminitis or other illness after exposure, contact a veterinarian without delay.
