Catnip does not reliably calm cats. For a cat that responds, Nepeta cataria can produce a brief change in behavior that ranges from relaxed to playful, stimulated, or agitated. Some cats show no response at all. That makes catnip an optional enrichment item—not a dependable treatment for anxiety, fear, or chronic stress.
The safest approach is to offer a small amount in a toy or around a scratching post, watch your cat’s reaction, and stop if the cat becomes distressed or develops vomiting or diarrhea. Ongoing behavior changes, safety problems, or suspected poisoning warrant veterinary advice.

What catnip does to cats
Catnip is the herb Nepeta cataria. The compound associated with the feline response is called nepetalactone. The available veterinary and poison-control guidance identifies that compound and describes observable behavior, but it does not establish a detailed neurological pathway or prove that catnip treats anxiety.
VCA Animal Hospitals summarizes the range clearly: “Cats that respond to catnip exhibit short-lived behavior changes ranging from relaxation to excitement.” A responding cat may sniff the herb, rub its face or body on it, roll, chase a toy, or become more active. Another cat may appear quieter for a short time. Neither reaction should be treated as a guaranteed sedative effect.

Relaxation is only one possible response
Owners sometimes interpret lying down after catnip as proof that the herb has calmed a nervous cat. It may instead be a brief post-play pause, or simply an individual response. Other cats become intensely playful, vocal, or restless. If your cat becomes more aroused, catnip is working as stimulation rather than calming enrichment and should not be used for a stressful event.
The effect is temporary
VCA describes the behavioral change as short-lived. The sources do not establish a universal duration, a repeatable dose, or a schedule that extends the effect. Avoid promising that catnip will keep a cat calm during travel, visitors, grooming, fireworks, or a veterinary appointment.
Which cats respond?
Response is highly variable. VCA reports that approximately 50% of cats do not respond at all and attributes sensitivity to genetics. That figure is an estimate from the VCA material, not a precise prevalence study: the page does not provide a sample size or an underlying citation. Treat it as a useful expectation that many cats will ignore catnip, not as a guarantee for any age, breed, or household.

Genetics matters more than training
A cat cannot be taught to respond to catnip through repeated exposure. A genetically insensitive cat may sniff a catnip toy and walk away every time. Conversely, a cat that responds may show a strong reaction to one form and little interest in another because freshness, concentration, and the surrounding activity differ.
Individual behavior still decides whether it is useful
Even among responders, the same cat may alternate between playful and subdued behavior. The practical test is your own cat’s body language: relaxed muscles and normal recovery suggest acceptable enrichment; frantic movement, persistent vocalizing, avoidance, swatting, or other signs of distress suggest that the item is a poor choice.
Is catnip a treatment for anxiety?
No. The cited veterinary sources do not establish catnip as a reliable treatment for diagnosed anxiety or other behavior disorders. Enrichment can make an indoor environment more interesting, but it does not address the cause of fear, conflict between cats, pain, illness, or an unsafe home setup.

For a cat with hiding, aggression, house-soiling, destructive behavior, appetite changes, or a sudden personality change, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than trying to mask the problem with catnip. Cornell’s feline behavior guidance advises consulting a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist for behavior concerns. A professional can check for medical contributors and design a behavior plan.

The ASPCA lists vomiting and diarrhea as possible clinical signs after catnip exposure. It also notes that some cats become sedated while others become stimulated. These effects make “calming” an unsafe assumption, especially when a cat is already frightened or medically unwell.
Stop when the reaction is negative
- Remove the catnip, toy, or loose herb if your cat becomes agitated, unusually frantic, or distressed.
- Do not offer more to try to push the cat past the reaction.
- Observe the cat in a quiet area and provide access to fresh water.
- Contact a veterinarian if signs persist, are severe, or are accompanied by injury, breathing trouble, collapse, or other urgent symptoms.
If harmful ingestion is suspected, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. The sources do not provide a general safe dose, so do not calculate one from a package label or from another cat’s experience.

Prevent toy-related problems
Inspect catnip-filled toys for torn seams, loose stuffing, frayed fabric, or detachable parts. A toy that releases large amounts of herb is not automatically better. Remove damaged toys and supervise initial sessions, particularly with cats that chew or swallow fabric.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to offer catnip as enrichment
Use catnip only when your cat has previously shown a comfortable, positive response. The goal is to add a voluntary activity, not to force contact or sedate the cat.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose a controlled setting. Start when the cat is healthy and the room is quiet. Do not make the first trial immediately before a stressful event.
- Offer one format. Present a catnip toy, or place a small amount of dried herb on or near a scratching post. Cornell specifically describes catnip as an enticement for scratching-post use.
- Let the cat investigate. Do not rub the herb into the cat’s face, hold the cat against it, or put it into food or water.
- Watch the whole response. Note sniffing, rubbing, rolling, play, relaxation, stimulation, avoidance, or agitation. The response—not the product label—determines whether the item is suitable.
- End the session if needed. Remove the item at the first sign of distress or gastrointestinal illness and record what happened for your veterinarian.
- Store it securely. Keep loose herb and toys where children and pets cannot consume large amounts without supervision.
Catnip toys
VCA notes that catnip toys can provide enrichment for a cat that responds positively. Toys also limit loose plant material in the environment and can combine catnip with chasing or batting. They are not a treatment device, and a toy that excites your cat should not be presented as a calming aid.

Dried catnip near a scratching post
Sprinkling or placing catnip on or around a scratching post can encourage investigation and use, according to Cornell. Keep the amount modest, keep it away from food and litter, and remove residue if it triggers stomach upset or attracts conflict between household cats.
Choosing a format without overpromising results
| Format | Useful when | What to watch for | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catnip-filled toy | Your cat already responds positively and enjoys batting, rubbing, or play. | Agitation, over-arousal, damaged seams, swallowed fabric, vomiting, or diarrhea. | VCA describes catnip toys as optional enrichment for responders; no comparative calming advantage is established. |
| Dried loose catnip | You want to entice investigation of a scratching post or play area. | Ingestion of excessive amounts, gastrointestinal signs, tracking herb through the home, or conflict over access. | The sources support optional enrichment use; they do not establish a dose or anxiety benefit. |
| Catnip applied around a scratching post | Your goal is to increase interest in an appropriate scratching surface. | The cat may ignore it or become stimulated rather than settle; remove it if the post becomes a source of conflict. | Cornell describes this as an enticement, not a behavior-disorder treatment. |
There is no source-backed ranking of these formats. Select the one that matches your cat’s observed response and your enrichment goal, then discontinue it if the reaction is negative.
What to do if catnip makes your cat excited or agitated
Move the item away and give the cat space. Lower noise and activity, avoid handling a cat that is swatting or trying to escape, and separate household pets if competition is escalating. Wait for normal behavior to return before offering any new enrichment. If agitation is prolonged, repeatedly triggered, or accompanied by injury or other abnormal signs, ask your veterinarian for guidance rather than repeating the experiment.

That still means catnip is unsuitable as a calming strategy. Reserve it, if at all, for supervised play at a time when increased activity is acceptable.
When persistent stress needs professional help
Seek veterinary advice when fear or stress is ongoing, worsening, or interfering with eating, drinking, sleep, elimination, movement, or safety. Sudden behavior changes deserve a medical check because pain and illness can look like anxiety.
VCA describes pheromone products in diffuser, spray, and collar forms as behavior modifiers used for various concerns, while also noting that evidence is limited for many complementary products. A veterinarian can discuss whether such an option belongs in a broader plan; do not assume any pheromone product, catnip product, or supplement will work for your individual cat.
Quick Recap
Practical takeaways for cat owners
- Catnip can produce relaxation, play, stimulation, or agitation, and the change is short-lived.
- Approximately half of cats may not respond, according to VCA’s attributed estimate; genetics is a major factor.
- Use catnip as optional enrichment in a toy or around a scratching post, never as a substitute for diagnosing anxiety.
- Stop after agitation, vomiting, diarrhea, or another adverse reaction.
- For persistent or dangerous behavior, involve a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist.
