Can a cat get a dog pregnant, or can they have babies?
No. A cat cannot get pregnant by a dog, and a dog cannot become pregnant by a cat. The UC San Diego Comparative Placentation reference says cats “have not hybridized with dogs, despite rumors in the popular press.” The available sources do not support claims of cat-dog hybrid offspring.

It helps to separate three things: an animal may display mating-related behavior, but behavior is not fertilization; fertilization is not the same as a viable pregnancy; and there is no recognized cat-dog offspring documented by the cited references. Why can’t cats and dogs reproduce together?
Cats and dogs are different species with distinct reproductive biology. Their reproductive processes are not interchangeable. Cornell’s veterinary guidance, for example, describes features of canine reproductive cycling and egg maturation that differ from those of other animals.

Chromosome counts and structure
Domestic cats have 38 chromosomes, while domestic dogs have 78, according to Hemely A. Hassan’s 1999 comparative study of G-banded karyotypes. Cornell also states that dogs normally have 78 chromosomes. Hassan’s study reports extensive chromosome rearrangements differentiating cat and dog karyotypes.
These figures help illustrate the genetic differences between the species, but chromosome count by itself is not a complete explanation for reproductive incompatibility. The relevant point is the broader separation in their genomes and reproductive biology, not a simple arithmetic rule.

Does an attempted mount mean an animal is injured?
Not necessarily, but the evidence cited here does not establish that every interaction is harmless or that every interaction requires emergency care. Separate animals if needed to prevent further distress or injury, and contact a veterinarian if either pet appears hurt, distressed, or has an unusual reproductive symptom.

A veterinarian can assess the animal and advise what care is appropriate. Cornell’s reproductive medicine service describes evaluation of infertility and reproductive anatomy or function, while its canine health guidance advises prompt veterinary attention when an animal’s condition warrants it.

What about stories of cat-dog hybrids?
Rumors and anecdotes are not evidence of a hybrid. The cited reference states that cats have not hybridized with dogs, and the reviewed sources do not document recognized cat-dog offspring. No prevalence estimate or measured risk rate for attempted cat-dog mating is established by these sources.
