Yes—cats and dogs that are comfortable together can generally drink from the same clean household water bowl. Keep another fresh-water station available so each pet can drink freely, and use separate bowls when illness, anxiety, competition, or a veterinarian’s care plan makes sharing unsuitable.
When sharing a household bowl is okay
Sharing a familiar bowl is generally acceptable if both pets are healthy, relaxed around each other, and able to drink without being crowded or blocked. VCA Animal Hospitals says pets can share a bowl, while recommending a fresh, clean water source for each pet. VCA’s guidance on feeding multiple pets is about household access, not a claim that every animal must drink from the same bowl.

Let the pets choose whether to share. A cat or dog that waits until the other leaves, avoids the bowl, or seems pressured should have water available elsewhere. A second station is a practical way to preserve access without forcing interaction.
How to set up water stations
- Keep at least one reliable source of fresh, clean water available for each pet; separate stations in different areas can help prevent crowding or competition.
- Choose locations each animal can reach easily and comfortably. If one pet guards a bowl or blocks the other, move or add a station rather than relying on the shared bowl.
- Refresh the water and wash water bowls every day. The CDC’s pet-supply cleaning guidance, dated February 18, 2026, recommends daily cleaning for bowls used for water and dry food.
No specialized bowl is established as necessary for sharing. An additional bowl that is easy to clean can serve as a second station; the important practical points are dependable access and routine cleaning.

When to separate bowls
If a pet is ill or being treated
Use separate bowls and follow the veterinarian’s instructions when either pet has a diagnosed infection or a treatment plan that calls for limiting shared supplies. Giardia, for example, can spread through contaminated water, food, surfaces, and objects such as bowls. The CDC’s guidance on Giardia and pets (March 26, 2024) advises owners to tell the veterinarian if other dogs or cats live in the household when a pet is being treated. Ask whether housemates need evaluation or treatment; an animal may shed Giardia without obvious symptoms.
If a pet is anxious, avoids the bowl, or guards it
Provide water in a separate location if either animal seems uncomfortable or cannot approach freely. Sharing should not be the only way a pet can get a drink.

If a veterinarian has prescribed a specific care plan
Follow that plan over general household guidance. Individual health needs can change whether shared bowls or supplies are appropriate.

A familiar bowl at home can be cleaned and monitored; an outdoor or public communal bowl may have an unknown cleaning history and may be used by many animals. The American Animal Hospital Association advises against community water bowls as a way to reduce infection exposure. That caution is not a blanket prohibition on two comfortable pets sharing a clean bowl at home.

What is—and is not—known about the risk
CDC guidance identifies contaminated water and objects as possible routes of Giardia transmission, but that does not quantify the risk from a cat and dog sharing one household bowl. The cited guidance does not establish a household infection rate or show that ordinary sharing is risk-free. The useful response is to keep bowls clean, ensure both pets have reliable access, and use separate supplies when illness or veterinary advice calls for it.
