Many cats become less able to digest lactose after kittenhood, so cow’s milk can cause digestive upset. Not every cat reacts the same way, but milk is unnecessary for adult and weaned cats: offer fresh water instead. Unweaned kittens need a different approach, guided by a veterinarian.

What lactose intolerance means for cats

Lactose is the sugar in milk. Cats that have difficulty digesting it may develop gastrointestinal signs after consuming dairy. Lactose intolerance is a recognized food reaction in cats, but an individual cat’s response can vary. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that milk is not generally recommended as a treat because many cats are lactose-intolerant and may have gastrointestinal problems after eating dairy (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, “Feeding Your Cat”).

What symptoms can milk cause?

In a cat that does not digest lactose well, cow’s or goat’s milk may lead to diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, or abdominal discomfort. These signs after dairy do not, on their own, establish lactose intolerance: other food reactions and causes can also produce digestive problems.

Do cats need milk?

No. Cats do not need milk as a drink or treat. VCA’s general feeding guidance says, “Contrary to popular belief, kittens and adult cats do not need milk.” Keep fresh, plain water available instead (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Nutrition – General Feeding Guidelines for Cats”).

What should I do if my cat has dairy-related symptoms?

  1. Stop offering the dairy and make fresh water available.
  2. Note what your cat ate and when, along with the signs you observed.
  3. Share those details with your veterinarian. VCA recommends a detailed diet history when assessing possible adverse food reactions (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Food Intolerance in Cats”).

Do not assume that lactose-free or plant-based cheese is a safe substitute. Cats Protection warns that ingredients in these products may be toxic to cats (Cats Protection, “Cats and Human Foods”).

What about kittens that have not been weaned?

Very young, unweaned kittens are different from adult cats. VCA says most kittens lose the ability to digest lactose by about 12 weeks; this is general feeding guidance, not a guarantee about an individual kitten. For an unweaned kitten, ask a veterinarian which milk replacement is appropriate and how to feed it. Do not use ordinary cow’s milk as a substitute.
