Sudden hiding can mean a cat is frightened by a change at home, but it can also be an early sign of pain, injury, or illness. Hiding by itself cannot tell you which. Pay attention to what is unusual for your cat and whether eating, drinking, moving, grooming, breathing, or using the litter box has changed.
These are 12 possible explanations, grouped by how they overlap—not a definitive veterinary checklist or a diagnosis. If hiding is new, persistent, or paired with other changes, contact your veterinarian. Straining to urinate with little or no urine, inability to urinate, breathing trouble, or severe distress needs urgent veterinary attention.

Why is my cat hiding all of a sudden?
Cats may retreat when they feel unsafe, stressed, painful, or unwell. A recent change in the home can offer a clue, but it does not rule out a medical problem: illness or pain can also change a cat’s behavior, and stress and health issues can occur together.

Use your cat’s normal behavior as the baseline. A cat who has always slept under the bed is different from one who suddenly disappears there and stops eating or playing. Also look for less obvious changes, such as reluctance to jump, altered grooming, irritability, or a change in toileting. These signs can help a veterinarian assess the problem, but they do not identify a cause on their own. VCA advises arranging a veterinary examination if your cat does not seem right to you: Recognizing the Signs of Illness in Cats.

12 possible reasons a cat may suddenly hide
The possibilities below are grouped by theme. Several can look alike, and more than one may apply.
Health, pain, or injury
- Pain. A cat in pain may withdraw or hide rather than show an obvious injury. Watch for reduced activity, difficulty jumping, irritability, grooming changes, appetite shifts, or altered toileting.
- Injury. A fall, collision, or other injury may make a cat seek a secluded place. Hiding is not enough to establish an injury; changes in movement or behavior are useful details to report to a veterinarian.
- Illness or feeling unwell. Cats may become withdrawn when sick, and a change in hiding behavior can be an early clue. Appetite, water intake, energy, breathing, grooming, and litter-box habits help put the change in context.
Urinary problems
- Feline idiopathic cystitis. This is one possible cause of lower urinary tract signs. Stress may contribute, but urinary symptoms should not be dismissed as “just stress.”
- Urinary stones. Stones are another possible cause of lower urinary tract signs and can have outward signs similar to other urinary conditions.
- Urethral obstruction. A blockage can prevent urine from passing and is an emergency. Repeated litter-box trips, straining, crying or distress, and little or no urine are warning signs. Male cats are at greater risk because of urethral anatomy. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center says suspected obstruction requires immediate veterinary attention in its Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease guidance.
These urinary conditions can look similar from the outside; a veterinary assessment is needed to tell them apart. It may include an examination and urinalysis, with further tests as indicated. Cornell reported in 2016 that death may occur in less than 24–48 hours after a complete urinary obstruction if it is not relieved. That is an emergency warning, not a safe period to wait.

Fear and changes at home
- A move to a new home. Unfamiliar surroundings may lead a newly arrived cat to hide while adjusting. That context differs from a sudden change in a cat who has been settled for a long time.
- A new person, baby, or pet. A new household member may make a cat feel less secure or change access to familiar spaces.
- A household member or pet leaving. A change in who is present can disrupt a cat’s usual routine and surroundings.
- A changed daily routine. Altered schedules, noise, or household activity may unsettle a cat.
- Rearranged furniture or changed surroundings. A familiar area may feel different if its layout or usual retreat has changed.
- A change in food or litter. Switching either can be a stressor for some cats.
These are possible stressors, not proof that hiding is behavioral. The American Animal Hospital Association discusses routine, household, and environmental changes as possible sources of cat anxiety and recommends predictable routines and a safe retreat: Cat Anxiety: Signs, Causes, and How to Help.

- Seek emergency veterinary care for possible inability to urinate. Repeated straining or litter-box attempts that produce little or no urine can signal an obstruction. Do not wait to see whether it resolves.
- Get immediate veterinary attention for breathing difficulty or severe distress.
- Contact your veterinarian promptly about new or persistent hiding, especially when appetite, drinking, activity, grooming, movement, or elimination has also changed.
VCA advises prompt examination when a cat seems unwell, and Cornell identifies suspected urethral obstruction as an emergency. Similar urinary signs can have different causes, so a veterinarian—not observation at home alone—is needed to assess them.

What to do while arranging veterinary advice
- Observe without pulling the cat out. Do not drag a frightened cat from a safe hiding place. Watch from a distance and note any visible changes.
- Record useful details. Note when the hiding began, whether food and water intake changed, what urine and stool you have observed, any possible household stressors, and other behavior or physical changes. Share this with the veterinarian; it supports the assessment but cannot diagnose the cause.
- Do not give human medication. Ask a veterinarian before giving any medication.
- Keep the environment calm. If there are no emergency signs, maintain a predictable routine and provide a quiet, covered retreat. Keep the hiding place away from food, water, and litter, as Cats Protection advises in its guide to cats hiding.
For a newly adopted cat, a quiet room with essentials available and time to emerge at its own pace may help with adjustment. Cats Protection advises contacting a veterinarian if eating, drinking, or toileting is a concern. For a long-settled cat, do not use the new-home explanation to dismiss a sudden change.
A covered hideaway can be an optional comfort feature, not a treatment or diagnostic tool. A safe retreat may help a stressed cat feel more secure, but making the home more comfortable does not rule out or treat pain, injury, or illness. Cats Protection also advises veterinary attention when a cat is hiding more than usual.
