It does not establish a safe amount of orange juice, so a lick or sip cannot be judged against a juice-specific threshold. Why orange juice is not a suitable drink for cats
Orange juice is citrus. The ASPCA’s orange plant entry lists orange as toxic to cats and identifies essential oils and psoralens as toxic principles. Its broader people-food guidance says citrus contains varying amounts of citric acid and essential oils, which can irritate.

The ASPCA distinguishes the fruit from other parts of the plant: “Fruit is edible, skins and plant material can cause problems.” It also says small citrus-fruit ingestions are unlikely to cause more than minor stomach upset, while significant quantities may cause irritation and possibly depression. That guidance is not a safe-dose rule for juice: the ASPCA does not separately assess orange juice or specify an amount that is safe for cats.

- Prevent further access. Move the juice out of reach. If it came in a package, keep the label or ingredient list available.
- Note the details. Estimate how much your cat may have consumed and when. ASPCA advises noting the amount ingested when seeking help.
- Contact a professional. Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 for case-specific advice. The ASPCA recommends contacting a veterinarian or poison control as soon as possible if exposure is suspected.
- Report any signs you observe. ASPCA lists vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and potential dermatitis among signs associated with orange exposure. This is not a complete diagnostic checklist; tell the professional what you see and when it began.
Do not try to decide that an exposure is harmless based on an assumed “safe” quantity. The available guidance does not give an orange-juice threshold or a juice-specific home-treatment protocol.

How to support your cat’s hydration safely
Keep clean, fresh water accessible. Water in food contributes to a cat’s total intake, so wet food or adding water to food may help increase intake. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine also notes that some cats may drink more from a fountain, though individual preferences vary. Its hydration guidance suggests that, in some cases, a small amount of tuna-can water or low-sodium chicken broth can make water more appealing.
Cornell gives a general estimate of about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day. This includes water from food; it is not an individualized prescription or a drinking-bowl quota. If you suspect dehydration, contact a veterinarian promptly. Cornell notes that dehydration may require clinical fluid therapy and investigation of its cause.
