A cat may hide because it feels unsettled, because it is in pain or ill, or simply because tucked-away places are part of its usual routine. Hiding alone cannot tell you which is true. Compare the behavior with your cat’s normal habits and look for other changes; a sudden or concerning change is a reason to contact your veterinarian.

Unfamiliar sights, smells, sounds, travel, or changes to a cat’s surroundings can feel unsettling. A cat may retreat to a quiet, enclosed place in response. That possibility does not establish what caused a particular cat to hide: the same behavior can have other explanations.

If your cat otherwise seems well and has chosen a hiding place, let it stay there rather than pulling it out. PetMD notes that forcibly removing a cat can worsen stress. An optional covered bed or cat cave can offer another place to retreat, but a hideaway is not a treatment for pain, illness, or anxiety.

Cats can conceal signs of illness and pain. VCA Animal Hospitals notes, “Cats have evolved to hide signs of illness and pain.” Becoming quieter, withdrawing, or hiding more than usual may be an early change an owner notices, but hiding does not identify a specific condition.

Some cats naturally spend time in tucked-away places. The useful comparison is not with a generic rule about how long cats should hide, but with your own cat’s usual behavior. A new or increased tendency to hide matters more than the mere fact that a cat likes a secluded spot.

When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact your veterinarian if the hiding is sudden, is a persistent change from your cat’s normal behavior, or occurs alongside other concerning symptoms. VCA advises that a sudden change should alert an owner to the need for veterinary attention; PetMD also recommends a veterinary visit when hiding accompanies other symptoms. The sources do not establish one time limit that applies to every cat, so do not wait for a particular number of hours or days if the change concerns you.

When you call, describe when the behavior changed and any differences you have noticed in eating, energy, sociability, litter box habits, breathing, appearance, or discharge. A veterinarian can assess your individual cat; hiding by itself is not enough to determine whether the cause is stress, pain, or illness.
