Can Cats Eat Beets? What the ASPCA Says About Roots and Leaves

ASPCA lists beets as non-toxic to cats, but that does not make them a recommended food or establish a safe serving size. Learn how roots and mature leaves differ and what to do if your cat eats them.

Yes, beets are listed as non-toxic to cats by ASPCA Poison Control, but that is not a recommendation to feed them. The listing specifically notes that large mature beet leaves contain oxalic acid, and ASPCA warns that plant material can still cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. The available guidance does not establish a safe serving size or a nutritional benefit for cats.

What “non-toxic” means for cats

ASPCA Poison Control lists beets (Beta vulgaris) as “Non-Toxic to Cats.” That is a toxicity classification, not a guarantee that every amount or part of the plant is harmless. The entry does not give a dose threshold or a recommended portion. Read ASPCA Poison Control’s beets entry.

ASPCA also says that eating any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats, including when the plant is listed as non-toxic. ASPCA’s general plant guidance advises contacting a veterinarian or its poison-control service if an animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance.

Does the beet part matter?

Yes. ASPCA’s beet entry states: “Large mature leaves contain oxalic acid.” This note applies specifically to large, mature leaves; it does not say that every beet part carries the same risk. The entry does not provide a dose threshold for the leaves or separately establish a safe amount of beetroot.

When deciding what to do after an exposure, note whether the cat ate the root, leaves, or another part, and estimate how much was eaten. The FDA says plant-ingestion risk can vary with the animal, the quantity, and the part of the plant. Its advice is general exposure guidance, not a beet-specific toxicity assessment. See the FDA’s guidance on potentially dangerous items for pets.

Should you feed a cat beets?

The toxicity listing does not establish that beets are a suitable cat food, provide a nutritional benefit, or give a safe serving size. The reviewed guidance also does not establish whether cooking changes the risk. Because those questions are unanswered, there is no evidence-based portion or preparation method to recommend here. Do not treat “non-toxic” as an endorsement to add beets to a cat’s diet.

What to do if your cat ate beets

  1. Identify what was eaten. Note whether it was beetroot or leaves, whether the leaves were large and mature, and roughly how much the cat may have consumed.
  2. Watch for illness. Plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. If your cat seems unwell, contact a veterinarian.
  3. Get professional advice for a concerning exposure. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control professional, especially if the amount or plant part is uncertain or your cat has symptoms. Do not use the non-toxic listing as a substitute for case-specific guidance.
  4. Have the details ready. Share the plant part, estimated amount, when it was eaten, and any changes you have observed. These details help professionals assess the exposure in light of your cat’s circumstances.

If your cat has red or otherwise abnormal urine after eating beets, arrange veterinary assessment rather than assuming the color is harmless pigment. The available primary guidance does not establish that beet ingestion changes feline urine color or distinguish pigment from blood.
