No. Cats do not have Down syndrome, a human condition caused by extra material from chromosome 21. Cats have a different chromosome arrangement, and veterinary sources do not recognize “feline Down syndrome” as a diagnosis. A cat’s unusual face, movement, or behavior can have other causes, so a veterinarian—not a photo or online label—should assess concerning signs.
What Down syndrome means—and why it does not apply to cats
Down syndrome is a specific human genetic condition involving extra full or partial material from chromosome 21. In cats, genes found on human chromosome 21 are represented on feline chromosome C2, which also carries genes from human chromosome 3. Because the chromosomes are arranged differently, the peer-reviewed review Genetic testing in domestic cats says an equivalent to human Down syndrome is not present in cats.

“Cat Down syndrome” and “feline Down syndrome” are informal labels, not recognized veterinary diagnoses. As Hill’s expert-reviewed article explains, physical appearance or behavior alone is not a basis for transferring a human diagnosis to an animal.
Can cats have other chromosome conditions?
Yes. Cats can have chromosomal abnormalities, but those are distinct from Down syndrome. The genetics review describes conditions including Turner syndrome (XO), Klinefelter syndrome (XXY), and chimerism. Some chromosome abnormalities have been associated with reduced fertility or distinctive physical traits.

Merck notes that rare male cats with XXY chromosomes are often tricolored and sterile. This is a sex-chromosome condition, not “feline Down syndrome.” Karyotype or gene-based testing may be considered in specific veterinary contexts, such as ambiguous genitalia or a history of reproductive problems; an unusual face or behavior alone does not establish a reason for consumer genetic testing.
What might explain unusual traits or movement?
A range of congenital, inherited, neurologic, environmental, or other medical issues can affect a cat’s appearance, development, movement, or behavior. Examples Merck lists among congenital or inherited conditions include cerebellar hypoplasia, eye or eyelid defects, heart defects, cleft palate, cryptorchidism, polydactyly, and deafness associated with white fur and blue eyes. These examples are not interchangeable explanations, and a visible trait does not identify its cause.

Cerebellar hypoplasia and tremors
One condition a veterinarian may consider when a kitten has tremors or coordination problems is cerebellar hypoplasia. Merck says it can result when the mother cat contracts feline panleukopenia during pregnancy. Affected kittens typically have tremors that do not worsen as they mature, and they can be good pets. That pattern is useful context, not a way to diagnose a cat without an examination.

Other possible causes
Infections, neurologic disease, congenital abnormalities, maternal toxin exposure, or early trauma may also be behind traits people attribute online to “feline Down syndrome.” The possibilities vary, and only an individual veterinary assessment can determine what is relevant for a particular cat.

What to do if your cat seems different
- Arrange a veterinary appointment if your cat has unusual development, difficulty walking, tremors, or other concerning changes.
- Describe what you observe. Note when the signs began, whether they have changed, and any relevant history you know, such as illness during the mother cat’s pregnancy.
- Let the veterinarian decide whether testing is appropriate. The exam and history guide whether diagnostic tests are useful; there is no single test panel prescribed for every cat with unusual traits.
Do not diagnose from a photograph or assume that a human condition explains a cat’s appearance. Hill’s Veterinary Experts state that the veterinary community does not recognize feline Down syndrome as a veterinary condition and does not support transferring human conditions to animals on the basis of appearance or behavior.
