No—don’t feed capers to cats. They’re usually brined or cured with salt, and that preparation makes them an unsuitable snack. The available guidance does not establish capers themselves as a specific feline poison or define a safe serving size. If your cat has eaten some, the amount, any brine consumed, and your cat’s health and symptoms matter.
Why capers aren’t a good treat for cats
Capers are flower buds commonly preserved in salty brine or cured with salt. A veterinarian-reviewed Catster article advises against feeding them because prepared capers can be high in salt. That supports a practical rule: don’t offer capers or their brine to your cat.

University Hospitals lists 254.9 mg of sodium in one tablespoon of drained canned capers. The page does not state a publication date. This is a human-food nutrition figure, not a safe-dose or toxicity threshold for cats; caper products and serving sizes can vary.

What to do if your cat ate capers
- Remove the food and brine. Prevent your cat from eating more, and note the product, estimated amount, whether brine was consumed, and when it happened.
- Contact a veterinary professional when the exposure may be significant. Call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service if your cat may have eaten a substantial amount, has a relevant health condition, or develops concerning signs. Don’t wait for symptoms after a potentially large ingestion; ask for advice based on your cat and the exposure. The FDA explains that the risk from a potentially harmful ingestion varies with the animal and the amount consumed.
- Don’t try to treat the exposure at home unless instructed. Pet Poison Helpline advises against giving home antidotes or inducing vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.
In the United States, the FDA lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661; fees may apply. The ASPCA says its poison-control service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that a consultation fee may apply. Confirm current contact details, availability, and fees when you call. Outside the United States, contact a local veterinarian or emergency animal hospital.
Signs that salt exposure may be serious
Pet Poison Helpline lists vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, excessive urination, dehydration, and lethargy among possible signs of salt exposure in cats. Its general guidance for pets also includes stumbling or disorientation, tremors, seizures, and collapse. These are salt-exposure warnings, not caper-specific outcomes. If signs appear, contact a veterinary professional promptly.
