Call your regular vet’s number for after-hours instructions. If your pet may be in crisis, contact an emergency hospital, confirm it can accept your pet, and go promptly.

If your vet is closed, call the clinic’s regular number and listen for its after-hours instructions. Follow the referral to an emergency hospital, then call that hospital to confirm it can see your pet. If your pet is having trouble breathing, has collapsed, is seizing, may have been poisoned, or has another serious emergency sign, seek veterinary care promptly—don’t wait for your regular clinic to reopen.

My vet is closed—what do I do?

  1. Call your regular clinic’s number. Listen to the full after-hours message. Your clinic may give an on-call number, use a shared on-call rotation, or direct clients to an emergency hospital. Get the specific local instructions rather than guessing. VCA explains that after-hours arrangements vary by practice: How Do Emergency Clinics Work?
  2. Call the recommended emergency facility. Confirm it is open, can accept your pet, and has the appropriate service available. Ask for its address and directions, whether a veterinarian is present around the clock, and whether its team can coordinate with your regular veterinarian. Hours, intake capacity, and referral arrangements differ, so do not rely on a search listing alone.
  3. Go promptly if your pet may be in crisis. Call the emergency hospital while you prepare to leave, if you can. The team may be able to prepare for your arrival and give advice specific to your pet’s transport or immediate first aid. Don’t delay departure to keep searching for online answers.
  4. For possible poisoning, contact veterinary help immediately. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic. If you cannot reach a veterinary professional, an animal poison-control service may be another point of contact. Gather the substance’s packaging or label and details about the exposure.
  5. Use first aid only as temporary support, under professional direction. Don’t induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control center tells you to. First aid is not a substitute for veterinary care; it is not a reason to wait at home instead of getting help.

VCA advises calling for veterinary guidance in an emergency rather than relying on online advice, and not leaving a voicemail as the only action. If you cannot reach a live person at your regular clinic, keep trying until you can speak with veterinary help or get directions to an emergency facility: VCA 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care.

Is this an emergency?

Call an emergency veterinary service if you suspect a medical crisis. Examples of signs VCA identifies as emergencies include:

  • Difficulty breathing, collapse, loss of consciousness, seizures, sudden weakness, or inability to move.
  • Possible ingestion of a drug, poison, foreign object, or unknown substance.
  • Unexplained bleeding or bruising; blood in vomit, stool, or urine; a serious wound; a broken limb; or significant trauma.
  • Severe vomiting, retching, or diarrhea; a swollen, hard, or painful abdomen; or extreme pain.
  • Eye injury, difficulty urinating (especially in male cats), stalled labor, heatstroke, or snake bite.
  • Facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a possible allergic reaction.

This list is not exhaustive and cannot diagnose your pet. Call an emergency veterinary service when you suspect a serious problem and follow the clinician’s directions; don’t wait for a particular symptom threshold. VCA’s Emergency Care Services page provides further examples.

Where can I take my pet after hours?

Start with the route your regular clinic provides, then confirm the next option by phone. These are possible routes, not interchangeable services:

Route When it may help What to confirm
Regular clinic’s after-hours line or on-call veterinarian Your practice may have an on-call rotation or specific referral instructions. Whether someone can advise you now and, if needed, which emergency facility to contact.
Referred emergency hospital The regular clinic directs you there, or your pet needs urgent in-person care. That it is open and can accept your pet; its location; and whether the emergency team can coordinate with your regular veterinarian.
Animal poison-control service You suspect toxic exposure and cannot reach a veterinary professional. How to contact the service and any applicable consultation fee. Do not substitute poison-control contact for urgent veterinary care if your pet is acutely ill or deteriorating.

Ask about immediate availability and travel time while you arrange care. A clinic’s referral or a facility’s listing does not by itself confirm that it can accept your pet at that moment.

What first aid is safe while I arrange care?

The American Veterinary Medical Association states: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.” Follow instructions from the emergency team or poison-control professional, and keep moving toward veterinary care. The AVMA’s Pet First Aid guidance includes a checklist for a pet first-aid kit; a basic kit can be useful for preparedness, but it is not treatment in place of a clinic.
