- Check the complete ingredient list. If the caramel came in candy, a dessert, or packaged food, look for chocolate, xylitol, and any other ingredients you are unsure about. Cornell lists chocolate and foods containing xylitol among hazards to cats. Keep the packaging so you can share the ingredients with the veterinarian.
- Call your veterinarian promptly if a toxic ingredient may be involved or you are unsure about the risk. Share the product name, ingredient list, amount your cat may have eaten, and when it happened. Cornell’s guidance for suspected toxic ingestion is direct: “Call your veterinarian immediately.”
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Follow the veterinary team’s instructions rather than trying a home remedy.
- Watch for signs of illness, but do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice when poisoning is suspected. Cornell lists vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blood in stool or urine, lethargy, loss of appetite, bruising, nosebleeds, irregular heartbeat, inability to urinate, and difficulty breathing among common poisoning signs.
The word “caramel” alone cannot establish the risk or predict what will happen. What can I give my cat as a treat instead?
Choose a cat-specific treat and offer only a small portion. Cornell notes that treats are generally not nutritionally complete and should be occasional; its general guideline is to keep treats to 10–15% of a cat’s daily caloric intake. This is a general treat guideline, not a caramel safety threshold. For cats with a medical condition or special food plan, ask the veterinary care team before adding treats.
Milk is not a reliable substitute: Cornell says it is not generally recommended as a treat because many cats are lactose-intolerant and may develop gastrointestinal problems.
