No—don’t rely on abdominal massage to treat constipation in cats. The veterinary guidance cited here does not recommend massage for retained stool, and it does not establish massage as an effective constipation treatment. If your cat is straining, describe the signs to a veterinarian rather than pressing on its belly or trying a home remedy.
What constipation looks like in a cat
Constipation is infrequent or difficult passage of stool, which is often hard and dry. A constipated cat may strain or appear uncomfortable while trying to defecate. More serious illness can also cause lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, depression, or abdominal discomfort.

Repeated trips to the litter box do not prove that the problem is constipation. Straining can also signal difficulty urinating, which can be an emergency—particularly in a male cat. If you are unsure whether your cat is passing urine, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Why massage is not a constipation treatment
Veterinary massage guidance discusses massage for pain management and other physical-medicine purposes, not as a way to relieve constipation. That absence of a recommendation does not prove massage has been tested and shown ineffective; it means the available guidance does not support presenting it as treatment.

A gentle touch your cat enjoys may be comforting, but it will not address the possible causes of retained stool. Avoid pressing on a painful or swollen abdomen. Massage is also inappropriate over certain problems, including open wounds, unstable fractures, uncontrolled pain, tumors, or infected areas; clotting problems call for caution.
Why a veterinarian needs to assess the cause
Constipation can have several causes, and the appropriate response depends on the cat’s condition. Possible contributors include dehydration, fur or other indigestible material, a foreign-body obstruction, pain, medication effects, neurologic problems, pelvic narrowing, tumors, strictures, or megacolon. Sometimes no cause is identified.

A veterinarian may take a history and perform a physical examination, including abdominal palpation. Depending on the case, assessment may also involve radiographs, blood or urine tests, a rectal examination, or ultrasound. This helps distinguish uncomplicated constipation from obstruction, underlying disease, or another problem such as difficulty urinating.
How veterinary treatment is chosen
Treatment is selected according to the cause and severity, whether the problem is recurrent, and whether an obstruction or underlying disease is suspected. Veterinary care may include hydration, treatment of an identified cause, dietary changes, or prescribed laxatives or medicines that affect intestinal movement.

More severe constipation or obstipation may require an enema or removal of impacted feces under sedation or anesthesia. For longstanding megacolon that does not respond to medical management, surgery may be considered. These are veterinary decisions, not instructions for home treatment.
What not to give or attempt at home
- Do not give a human laxative unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to. Human-use laxatives can be very dangerous for pets; use only a laxative prescribed for your cat.
- Do not try an enema or manually remove stool. Some enemas require training or veterinary assistance, and severe cases may need procedures performed by a veterinary team.
- Do not treat belly massage as a substitute for assessment. It does not resolve dehydration, an obstruction, medication effects, or other possible causes.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian if your cat is straining, passing hard or dry stool, or having difficulty defecating. Seek prompt advice if there is vomiting, reduced appetite, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, or repeated litter-box visits with little or no urine. Tell the clinic what you have observed and whether you have seen your cat pass urine; do not wait on massage to see if the problem resolves.
