No. Cats should not eat chives: they are toxic, whether raw, cooked, dried, powdered, or included in a liquid. If your cat may have eaten any, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly for advice tailored to your cat and the exposure.

Why chives are unsafe for cats

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are listed as toxic to cats by the ASPCA. They belong to the Allium group, which is associated with poisoning in cats. The feline-specific overview from VCA Animal Hospitals, authored by Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, for Pet Poison Helpline, states: “All forms are poisonous to cats, including raw, cooked, dried, powdered, and liquid preparations.”

Cooking or drying does not make chives safe

Do not offer chives as a treat or assume they are harmless when mixed into cooked food, seasoning, or a liquid. Dried and powdered chives are more concentrated because water has been removed, but no form is considered safe for cats.

What signs can chive poisoning cause?

Chives may irritate the digestive system. Possible signs include mouth irritation, drooling, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. VCA notes that gastrointestinal irritation may occur with potentially any amount ingested.

With larger exposures, Allium compounds can damage red blood cells and interfere with oxygen delivery. Possible signs include weakness, pale gums, a faster heart rate, faster or more labored breathing, panting, and red-colored urine. Red-cell destruction can also lead to kidney damage. The ASPCA likewise lists vomiting, anemia, blood in urine, weakness, increased heart rate, and panting among possible signs.

Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice: a cat may need professional assessment even if it seems well. The sources do not establish a chive-specific symptom-onset timeline.

What to do if your cat ate chives

  1. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Tell them you suspect chive ingestion and ask what to do next. Risk depends on the individual cat and exposure; the available guidance does not establish a safe dose for cats.
  2. Share the exposure details you know. Explain whether the chives were fresh, cooked, dried, powdered, or liquid; estimate the amount; and say when the cat may have eaten them. Also describe any signs you have noticed.
  3. Do not induce vomiting at home. VCA’s guidance on toxic hazards for cats warns that no over-the-counter products safely induce vomiting in cats. Salt and hydrogen peroxide can cause poisoning or significant injury.

What veterinary care may involve

A veterinarian may assess the suspected exposure alongside the cat’s signs and red-blood-cell changes. Bloodwork may be used to check red blood cells and kidney function. Depending on the case, care can include decontamination, monitoring, supportive treatment, and medication for signs; hospitalization may be recommended if red-cell destruction occurs. These are veterinary decisions, not home-treatment steps.

How much chive is toxic to a cat?

The cited guidance does not give a feline chive dose that is safe or a threshold that predicts poisoning. Do not use an online amount estimate to decide whether to wait: contact a veterinarian or poison-control service and provide the best exposure estimate you can.
