Why Does My Cat Stalk Me? How to Read the Behavior

Stalking can be predatory play, but context matters. Learn what to watch for, how to redirect pouncing, and when a veterinarian should assess the behavior.

Your cat may be stalking you as part of predatory play: watching, creeping, chasing, and pouncing are natural parts of the sequence. But stalking by itself does not reveal intent. Fear, territorial concern, redirected arousal, pain, or aggression can also be involved, so look at the cat’s posture, what happens before and after the stalk, and where it occurs.

Why is my cat stalking me?

Predatory play is a common explanation

Cats are built to stalk, chase, pounce, and capture moving targets. A cat that crouches behind furniture and springs at your feet may be treating them as prey during play, particularly if the behavior happens when you move, follows a predictable pattern, or appears when the cat has energy and few suitable play outlets. Kittens and young cats can be especially rambunctious, though play does not end in adulthood. Veterinary guidance describes play-related aggression as a sequence that can include stalking, pouncing, and biting. VCA’s guidance on play and predatory aggression explains the role of appropriate play opportunities.

Stalking can also happen in a tense context

A cat may watch or approach a person who comes near a favored resting spot or an area the cat treats as its territory. Fear, redirected arousal, and pain are other possible contributors. If the cat blocks your path, crouches, hisses, or strikes, do not assume it is playing simply because stalking is part of the sequence. VCA’s guidance on aggression toward visitors describes how context and the interaction matter.

How can I tell whether the stalking is play or a warning?

Read the whole interaction rather than relying on one signal. Tail thrashing, flattened ears, and dilated pupils can occur during play aggression, but they can also accompany aggression or fear. Cornell lists dilated pupils, ears flattened backward, a raised or lashing tail, and an arched back among possible aggression signs; fearful posture can include flattened ears, whiskers pressed downward, and a tucked tail. None of these cues alone diagnoses what the cat intends. Consider the setting, the cat’s full posture, what triggered the behavior, and what follows the stalk. Cornell’s overview of feline aggression provides further context.

What should I do when my cat stalks me?

Redirect playful stalking to a toy

Offer regular interactive play with a prey-like toy the cat can chase and catch. A wand toy lets you move the target while keeping your hands away from the cat’s claws and teeth. Do not wiggle fingers or toes to tease the cat: those can become painful targets as a kitten grows, and bites or scratches can become infected. See VCA’s advice on play and play toys for more on providing suitable play outlets.

Plan around predictable ambushes

Notice when and where the cat tends to stalk you. If a particular time or hiding place repeatedly sets up a pounce, offer play before that moment and, where practical, limit access to the hiding spot. Cornell recommends looking for patterns, using play to distract, and managing access to ambush locations when feasible.

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Arrange a veterinary examination if the behavior is new, unexpectedly aggressive, difficult to predict, associated with handling, or likely to cause injury. Pain and medical problems can contribute to aggression; Cornell notes possible links with conditions including hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, dental disease, and central nervous system problems. As Cornell puts it, “The first step in managing an aggressive cat is to ensure that there is no medical reason for aggressive behavior.” If aggression persists or creates a safety risk after medical causes have been assessed, a veterinary behaviorist may be appropriate.
