No—chorizo is not a suitable treat for cats. It is a salted, spiced processed meat, and recipes vary; some may contain onion or garlic, both of which the ASPCA lists as toxic to cats. If your cat ate chorizo and either ingredient may be present—or you cannot confirm the ingredients—contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms.
Why chorizo is a poor choice for cats
Chorizo is cured meat made with salt and spices, and its ingredients vary by recipe and product. A veterinary-reviewed overview of chorizo for cats advises avoiding it for those reasons and because some formulations may include ingredients harmful to cats. You cannot establish that a product is safe from its name, appearance, or the size of a bite; check the actual package label or recipe.

The clearest ingredient concerns are onion and garlic. The ASPCA lists onion and garlic as toxic to cats. Its entries describe possible vomiting and damage to red blood cells, which can lead to hemolytic anemia. They also list signs including blood in the urine, weakness, a high heart rate, and panting.
What to do if your cat ate chorizo
- Take away the remaining food. Keep the package or recipe information if you have it.
- Check the ingredients. Look for onion, garlic, and other seasonings. If the recipe or amount is unknown, say so when you call.
- Get prompt, case-specific advice if onion or garlic may be present. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. The ASPCA advises discussing suspected toxic exposures with a veterinarian or poison control immediately; its Poison Control number is (888) 426-4435.
- Seek urgent veterinary care if your cat is unwell. Vomiting, weakness, panting, a rapid heart rate, or blood in the urine are among the signs the ASPCA lists for onion and garlic exposure.
The available guidance does not establish a chorizo-specific safe dose or a bite size that can be assumed harmless. Do not try to calculate a safe amount or wait at home based only on the assumption that your cat ate very little. The veterinarian or poison-control professional will need to assess the ingredients, amount, timing, and your cat’s circumstances.

What treats are more appropriate?
Choose a treat made for cats or offer a small portion of your cat’s regular complete food. The WSAVA Guide to Treats for Cats cautions that human food and table scraps can be unhealthy or dangerous, and identifies onions, leeks, shallots, garlic, and chives as toxic food ingredients. If your cat has a medical condition, food sensitivity, or prescribed diet, ask your veterinary healthcare team which treats are suitable.

The ASPCA entries support the specific onion and garlic toxicity information and its Poison Control guidance covers suspected exposures generally. Chorizo-specific context comes from a secondary article marked “Vet Approved,” reviewed by Dr. Lorna Whittemore MRCVS and updated September 15, 2026; it describes chorizo as cured meat with salt and spices and notes that ingredients vary. None of these sources establishes a safe chorizo dose for cats.
