Keep up with veterinary checkups, watch for changes in mobility, appetite, teeth, and behavior, and make the home easier to navigate when needed. Your veterinarian can help decide which tests, treatments, and preventive care suit your dog or cat.
When is a dog or cat considered senior?
There is no single age that makes every pet senior. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says the relevant age varies by species and, for dogs, by breed. Its canine life-stage guideline defines senior as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan through the end of life. The 2021 feline life-stage and senior-care guidelines use older than 10 years for cats. These are guideline definitions, not a diagnosis or a substitute for assessing an individual animal. How often should an older pet see a veterinarian?
AAHA recommends examinations every six months for dogs older than 7 and cats older than 10, including pets that appear healthy. Its recommendation is a useful starting point for a care plan; your veterinarian can adjust the schedule to your pet’s health and circumstances. A visit may include a hands-on physical examination and discussion of dental health, diet, eating habits, and behavior. Depending on what the veterinarian finds, possible tests include a complete blood count, blood chemistry, urinalysis, thyroid testing, or blood-pressure measurement. This is not an automatic panel for every older pet: the veterinarian selects tests based on the animal and clinical context.

What changes should you watch for?
Keep track of changes in how your pet moves, eats, sleeps, behaves, and manages familiar activities. Note when a change began and whether it is getting worse; concrete observations can help your veterinarian assess what is happening. A new difficulty walking, eating, or using the litter box deserves attention rather than being assumed to be “just old age.”
Mobility and pain
Stiffness or difficulty getting around may have several causes. An examination can help identify the problem and guide options such as veterinarian-recommended medication, weight management, joint supplements, or physical therapy and rehabilitation. Do not start pain medicine, supplements, or a new exercise program without veterinary advice.

Teeth and eating
Bad breath, difficulty eating, facial swelling, or pawing at the mouth are reasons to discuss dental health with a veterinarian. Assessment may include dental X-rays and cleaning under anesthesia. At-home toothbrushing or a dental diet may be part of care, but neither replaces a veterinary dental assessment or treatment when needed.
Behavior and senses
Confusion, anxiety, or changes in behavior or personality can occur with age, but age alone does not establish cognitive dysfunction. Health problems, pain, or sensory loss can also affect behavior. Ask your veterinarian to assess the change; veterinarian-guided options may include medication, environmental enrichment, or supplements formulated for brain health.

How should diet and prevention change?
Choose food according to your pet’s health, body condition, and nutritional needs—not simply because a package is labeled “senior.” Depending on the animal, a veterinarian may discuss a lower-calorie, higher-fiber diet to help prevent weight gain, higher protein to support muscle mass, or a therapeutic diet for a chronic condition. Those examples are not universal prescriptions.
Older pets still need disease prevention. Ask your veterinarian to tailor vaccination and parasite-prevention plans to your pet’s lifestyle, location, and medical circumstances. Core vaccines and year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention are examples AAHA discusses, not a schedule that applies identically to every animal.

What can you change at home to help?
Make adaptations in response to your pet’s actual access or mobility needs. AAHA identifies ramps, rugs or floors with good traction, and soft or orthopedic bedding as possible supports. Its recommendations also mention stairs, harnesses or slings, nonslip flooring, and low-sided litter boxes for mobility-compromised pets. These aids can make movement or access easier, but they do not diagnose or treat the cause of a problem.
- For steps or raised surfaces: Consider a stable ramp or stairs suited to the pet’s size, ability, and the height involved. Watch how the animal uses it; an aid that is difficult or unsafe to navigate is not a good fit.
- For slippery floors: Rugs or runners with good traction may help. Make sure they stay in place and do not create a new tripping hazard.
- For resting: Soft or orthopedic bedding may provide a more comfortable place to lie down; it should not be presented as a treatment for arthritis or pain.
- For a cat having trouble entering the litter box: A low-sided box may ease access. A new litter-box problem also warrants a health assessment.
- For assisted movement: A harness or sling may be useful in some situations, but ask a veterinarian how to select and use one safely.
How do you plan for comfort and quality of life?
Senior care includes planning for comfort as health changes, not only treating medical problems. AAHA’s guidance includes palliative and hospice care and points to collaborative end-of-life care focused on maximizing comfort and minimizing suffering. There is no single quality-of-life score or universal threshold that determines a particular decision. Talk with your veterinarian over time about symptoms, comfort, care goals, and what is manageable for your household. AAHA’s end-of-life care guidance.

AAHA’s senior-care framework is intended to guide individualized decisions for both healthy and unwell pets. It covers preventive and diagnostic care, treatment, pain, nutrition, dentistry, behavior, environmental changes, other health conditions, and end-of-life planning.
