Veterinary sources reviewed for this topic do not establish that eating an untreated cockroach is toxic to cats. That does not prove every roach is safe: the main concern is whether it may have contacted roach bait or insecticide. If pesticide exposure is possible, or your cat seems unwell, call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.

My cat ate a cockroach—should I be worried?

Consider two things: whether bait or insecticide could have been involved, and whether your cat has symptoms. The reviewed veterinary guidance addresses poisoning from roach products and insecticides; it does not quantify the risk of eating an untreated cockroach or establish a safe amount. Do not treat the absence of symptoms as proof that a suspected pesticide exposure is harmless.

  • Bait or pesticide exposure is plausible: Move your cat away from the area and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service. Keep the product packaging or take a clear photo so you can identify the product and its active ingredient. Pet Poison Helpline’s roach-poison guidance explains the exposure concern.
  • Your cat has symptoms: Seek veterinary advice promptly, especially for severe signs such as breathing difficulty, collapse or seizures.
  • No known pesticide exposure and no symptoms: The reviewed sources do not establish untreated cockroach ingestion as toxic, but they also do not establish that it is risk-free. Monitor your cat and contact your veterinarian if you learn the insect may have been exposed or your cat becomes unwell.

What signs can indicate poisoning?

Pet Poison Helpline lists reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and skin irritation among signs associated with roach-poison exposure. Insecticide exposure can also cause drooling, weakness, tremors, twitching, breathing difficulty, collapse or seizures. These are warning signs of possible poisoning; the sources do not show that ordinary ingestion of an untreated cockroach causes them.

What to do if bait or insecticide may be involved

  1. Move your cat away from the area. Prevent further contact with the insect, bait station or treated surface.
  2. Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service. Describe what happened, when it happened, and any signs you have observed. Follow their directions for next steps. Pet Poison Helpline’s emergency instructions advise contacting a veterinarian or the service after suspected poisoning.
  3. Identify the product if you can do so safely. Save the packaging or take a clear photo. Note the product name, active ingredients, EPA registration number, dilution, and when and where it was applied, if those details are available. Different pest-control products can pose different concerns; Pet Poison Helpline’s overview of pest-control products discusses why identifying the product matters.
  4. Do not try a home treatment without direction. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.

How to reduce the chance of another exposure

  • Follow the insecticide label, including instructions about where and how to apply it.
  • Keep pets away from treated areas until the insecticide has dried completely.
  • Place bait stations where pets cannot reach them. The ASPCA’s “How to Safely Treat Your House with Insecticides”, dated May 21, 2026, specifically advises keeping bait stations inaccessible to pets.
  • Keep product and application details available in case a pet is exposed.
