What fish oil may help with
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Veterinary guidance describes their anti-inflammatory effects and possible use as part of care for selected conditions, including skin allergies and dermatitis, arthritis, kidney or heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, epilepsy, and some cancers. That does not mean an over-the-counter supplement treats these diseases or that every cat will benefit. Few supplements have undergone rigorous trials to establish efficacy. What the studies can—and cannot—tell you
A 2024 prospective, randomized, blinded study followed 30 cats with naturally occurring osteoarthritis during 13 weeks on a therapeutic diet containing marine EPA and DHA, turmeric extract, and hydrolysed collagen, followed by a four-week washout. Investigators reported improvements in several functional outcomes. Because the diet combined multiple active ingredients, the study cannot show that fish oil alone caused the improvement or establish the effect of a stand-alone supplement. Read the study abstract.
A 2025 feline feeding study compared diets supplying DHA from fish oil or algal oil. Serum DHA rose similarly as dietary DHA increased, but cats eating the tested fish-oil foods had higher circulating EPA at equivalent tested DHA levels. This suggests algal oil can provide DHA in food; it does not establish that every algal product supplies the EPA contribution of fish oil. Read the Journal of Animal Science study.

A 2020 study found no measured effects on overall health, physiological parameters, food consumption, body weight, hematology, coagulation, or clinical chemistry in the studied queens and kittens fed diets with algal oil at up to 3% of diet dry matter through 32 weeks of kitten age. These were study conditions for algal-oil diets during reproduction and growth, not a home dosing recommendation or a guarantee about fish-oil products. Read the full study.
How to choose a dose and give it
There is no universal cat dose established by the sources cited here. The right amount depends on your cat’s health, existing diet, reason for using the supplement, product concentration, and medicines. A product’s total fish-oil amount is not the same as its EPA-plus-DHA amount, so check the label and have your veterinarian interpret it rather than converting the total oil into a dose yourself.

Fish oil is given orally in liquid or capsule form. Follow the veterinarian’s directions; measure liquid carefully. VCA notes that full effects may take several weeks. Possible side effects include mild stomach upset, fishy odor, delayed wound healing, oily coat, itchiness, and skin flaking. Stop giving the supplement and contact a veterinarian immediately if your cat develops an allergic reaction, abnormal bruising or bleeding, signs of pancreatitis, appetite loss, incoordination, or seizures. VCA identifies abnormal bleeding as a particular concern in cats.

Check with the veterinarian before use if your cat takes anticoagulants or has a clotting disorder, diabetes, a history of pancreatitis, diarrhea, or is pregnant or nursing. Fish oil may interact with anticoagulants, doxorubicin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as meloxicam or robenacoxib. Tell the veterinarian about all medicines and supplements your cat receives. VCA lists additional precautions and reactions.
A 2013 peer-reviewed review also discusses possible concerns such as altered platelet function, gastrointestinal effects, delayed wound healing, lipid peroxidation, nutrient excess or toxin exposure, weight gain, changes in immune function or blood-glucose control, and drug interactions. What to check before buying
- Ask your veterinarian whether supplementation fits your cat’s condition and diet, and which product and amount to use.
- Compare the labeled EPA and DHA per serving, not just the total amount of fish oil.
- Consider whether a liquid or capsule is practical to administer, and follow the veterinarian’s directions for the chosen form.
- Do not assume that an algal-oil product is interchangeable with fish oil: the tested diets produced similar serum DHA responses but higher EPA responses with fish oil at equivalent tested DHA levels.
In the United States, the FDA does not review non-drug supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold, according to VCA. Product claims therefore do not establish that a supplement is effective or appropriate for your cat.
