Check the ingredients, calories, size, and texture. VCA Canada advises offering a cat only a small dog treat with fewer than 5 calories per piece; treats overall should make up no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories. Those are general guidelines, not a guarantee for every product or cat.
What to do if your cat ate a dog treat
First, check the package and estimate how much your cat ate. A small accidental bite may be uneventful for a healthy cat, but the words “dog treat” alone do not tell you whether the ingredients or portion are safe.

- Contact a veterinarian promptly if the treat contains a potentially toxic ingredient, your cat ate a large amount, or your cat develops symptoms.
- Ask your veterinary team for advice if your cat has a medical condition, food sensitivity, or prescribed diet.
- Check the treat’s size and texture. Large, hard, or chew-style treats may pose choking, injury, or obstruction risks; supervise cats with treats and chews.
Do not wait for symptoms if you know the treat contained a concerning ingredient. A veterinarian can advise what to do based on the product and amount. The ASPCA guidance on calming-aid and chew exposures is specific to those products, so it should not be treated as a universal protocol for ordinary dog treats.
Which dog-treat ingredients are unsafe for cats?
Read the current ingredient label rather than assuming all dog treats have the same recipe. VCA and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) list several ingredients to avoid, including:

- Onions, garlic, and other alliums
- Grapes, raisins, currants, and sultanas
- Chocolate and caffeine
- Xylitol
- Alcohol and raw yeast dough
VCA also cautions against macadamia nuts and salty snacks. These ingredients are not present in every dog treat; the concern depends on the actual product and exposure. If you cannot identify an ingredient or are unsure how much your cat ate, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate animal poison service rather than guessing.
How many calories can a cat have from treats?
VCA and WSAVA recommend that treats contribute no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories. VCA Canada adds a cross-species guideline: if offering a dog treat to a cat, choose a small piece with fewer than 5 calories. That under-5-calorie suggestion is for a small dog treat offered to a cat—not a universal safety threshold for every treat.

Calories per piece vary, so check the package and count treats as part of the daily total. A cat’s calorie needs depend on the individual; ask your veterinary team to help calculate an appropriate allowance, especially if weight management or illness is a concern.
Why dog treats should not replace cat food
A treat is not a diet. Dog-formulated foods are not designed to meet all feline nutritional requirements, and dog treats should not become a regular replacement for cat food. Cats have distinct needs, including taurine, preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid, and higher amounts of some nutrients. Taurine deficiency over time can harm the retina and heart; one treat does not cause that deficiency.

VCA Canada notes that a morsel or two of dog food will not hurt most healthy cats, but that observation about a small amount of food is not a blanket safety assurance for every dog treat, ingredient, or quantity.

For rewards, choose a treat made for cats or set aside a portion of your cat’s regular food. Look for small pieces with modest calories, check the current ingredient list, and include treats in the daily calorie allowance. If your cat has a health condition, dietary sensitivity, or prescribed diet, ask the veterinary team before introducing any treat.
