What to do if your cat eats flour or dough
If it was plain flour
- Move the flour out of reach and note what kind it was and approximately how much your cat may have eaten.
- If it was only a small lick and your cat is acting normally, the reviewed veterinarian Q&A says the exposure is not alarming. Do not offer flour as a treat.
- Call your veterinarian if the amount was substantial or uncertain, your cat has a relevant medical condition, or vomiting, diarrhea, or another abnormal sign appears. The reviewed primary sources do not establish a cat-specific safe dose.
If it was raw yeast dough
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic now, even if your cat appears normal. Tell them the dough contained baker’s yeast and when and how much may have been eaten, if known.

- Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice. Yeast can continue producing gas and ethanol in the warm stomach.

Why raw yeast dough is dangerous to cats

Signs that need urgent veterinary advice
After possible raw dough ingestion, watch for a tense or swollen abdomen, retching or vomiting, restlessness, weakness, difficulty breathing, stumbling, acting intoxicated, abnormal crying, or other unusual behavior. The sources also describe low blood sugar and, in severe cases, coma. These signs can reflect stomach expansion, obstruction, or ethanol effects. Contact a veterinarian promptly after a suspected ingestion rather than waiting to see whether signs appear.
