Hazelnuts are also calorie-dense: one ounce contains approximately 17 grams of fat, according to Catster’s article, updated September 15, 2026. That is a food-composition figure, not a recommended serving for a cat. A high-fat food may cause digestive upset. ASPCA Poison Control gives broader guidance that fats in nuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts can cause vomiting and diarrhea and potentially pancreatitis in some pets; this is not evidence of a particular hazelnut dose causing pancreatitis in cats. Whole nuts can be a choking hazard
Catster describes hazelnuts as typically 10–15 mm in diameter and 15–25 mm long, and flags their size and hardness as a potential choking risk. Possible signs include gagging, retching, labored breathing, pawing at the mouth, and drooling. If your cat is gagging or having trouble breathing, seek urgent veterinary help.

Plain hazelnuts are different from spreads and seasoned products
Do not apply the advice about a plain nut to a hazelnut spread, candy, or seasoned snack. Some cocoa-containing spreads contain chocolate. ASPCA identifies chocolate, coffee, and caffeine as sources of methylxanthines that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and potentially death. The actual risk depends on the product and amount eaten, so give a veterinarian the ingredient list and quantity rather than judging by the word “hazelnut.”
Seasoned nuts also vary. ASPCA lists salt and excessively salty foods as hazards, but that does not establish that every seasoned product contains a dangerous amount. What to do if your cat ate a hazelnut
- Remove the remaining food. Keep the package or take a photo of the ingredient list, especially if the food was a spread, candy, or seasoned snack.
- Note the details. Estimate how much your cat ate and when. ASPCA advises recording the amount when seeking help for a potentially risky food ingestion.
- Call for individualized advice. Contact your cat’s veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or a pet poison-control service. The FDA advises prompt contact after a pet eats something potentially dangerous. Cornell’s Feline Health Center also recommends prompt veterinary consultation and bringing the product label or sample when possible.
- Act urgently for choking signs. Gagging, retching, pawing at the mouth, drooling, or labored breathing may indicate a problem that needs immediate veterinary attention.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you. Cornell warns that vomiting can cause additional harm in some poison exposures.

Choose a cat-appropriate snack instead
If you want to offer a treat, use a commercial treat made for cats and follow its portion guidance. Choose with your cat’s health and any prescribed diet in mind; ask your veterinarian for individual dietary advice. Treats are optional, and they do not prevent or treat problems if a cat has eaten a hazelnut.
