Asian ladybeetles (Harmonia axyridis) can irritate or ulcerate a cat’s mouth if eaten. The ASPCA says swallowing one or two is not likely to be a big deal, while a large number may cause more serious problems, including stomach ulcers. That is not a guaranteed safe-dose rule, and the guidance is specific to Asian ladybeetles—not every insect called a ladybug.

What can happen if a cat eats an Asian ladybeetle?

The ASPCA says Asian ladybeetles secrete defensive compounds when ingested by dogs or cats. These compounds may cause irritation and even ulceration in the mouth. If a cat eats a large number, more serious problems, including stomach ulcers, may occur. The ASPCA describes one or two as not likely to be a big deal, but it does not define a safe dose or guarantee that an individual cat will have no reaction. Does this apply to every ladybug?

No. The ASPCA guidance names the Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis. It should not be treated as a finding about every species commonly called a ladybug. If you are unsure what insect your cat ate, tell your veterinarian that the identification is uncertain rather than assuming the ASPCA’s species-specific guidance applies.

What should you do if your cat ate one?

If your cat ate several beetles, seems unwell, or you cannot confidently identify the insect, contact your veterinarian for advice. Cornell recommends calling a veterinarian immediately for suspected toxic ingestion; if your regular veterinarian is unavailable, call an emergency veterinary clinic or animal poison-control hotline. Save a sample of the insect or a clear photo if possible, and share how many you think your cat ate and when.

  1. Call a veterinary professional. Explain the suspected ingestion, your cat’s condition, and the insect identification if known.
  2. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to. Cornell warns that vomiting can cause further damage with some poisons.
  3. Keep a sample or photo. This may help the professional identify the insect.

For U.S. readers, ASPCA Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 and says the service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A consultation fee may apply.

What signs should prompt urgent veterinary attention?

Mouth irritation or ulceration is the effect the ASPCA specifically associates with Asian ladybeetle ingestion; stomach ulcers may be a concern after a large number are eaten. Cornell’s broader list of possible poisoning signs includes vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blood in stool or urine, lethargy, loss of appetite, bruising, nosebleeds, irregular heartbeat, inability to urinate, and difficulty breathing. Those are general poisoning signs, not a ladybeetle-specific checklist. If your cat has difficulty breathing, seizures, or another severe symptom, seek emergency veterinary care.
