Trouble jumping, stiffness, less activity, changes in grooming or temperament, and difficulty using the litter box can be more noticeable clues. These signs have other possible causes, so share what you observe with a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose arthritis at home. Veterinary assessment and an individualized plan can help protect your cat’s comfort and mobility.
What arthritis in cats is—and what can contribute to it
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease in which cartilage that cushions a joint breaks down. As the joint changes, bone contact can contribute to pain, inflammation, swelling, reduced range of motion, and lasting structural damage. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that changes to an affected joint cannot be reversed, although progression may be slowed. FDA overview of feline osteoarthritis

Age is not the only possible contributor. Factors described by VCA Animal Hospitals include body conformation and condition, excess weight, abnormal joint development, prior injury or infection, orthopedic surgery, and nutritional history. The elbows and hips are common sites; the shoulders, hocks, knees, spine, and sternum can also be affected. VCA: Arthritis in Cats
How can I tell if my cat might have arthritis?
Look for changes from your cat’s usual routine, especially a gradual loss of mobility or a change in everyday behavior. Limping can occur, but it is not required for OA to be present.

These are observations to report, not proof of arthritis; other conditions can cause similar changes. Record when a behavior happens and, if practical, take a short video of your cat walking, climbing, or attempting a jump at home. A clinic visit may not show the cat’s typical movement.
The FDA reports that in one study of 28 cats with OA, fewer than half limped; almost three-quarters did not want to jump, and two-thirds jumped a shorter distance. Those figures describe that specific study, not the proportion of all cats with arthritis. FDA overview and cited study observations

How a veterinarian assesses possible arthritis
Assessment may combine your history and home observations with a physical examination, joint palpation, imaging such as X-rays, and cat-specific pain or behavior questionnaires. Cats may hide pain or resist handling, so the veterinarian may need to interpret several kinds of evidence together. A questionnaire can inform the assessment but does not diagnose OA on its own.

The FDA describes a study of 13 cats with OA in which half of examined joints had OA, while 10% of joints were painful and had X-ray changes. This finding illustrates that visible changes and pain do not correspond neatly; a normal X-ray does not by itself rule out OA. FDA explanation of diagnosis and imaging

Treatment: a plan tailored to the cat
There is no single approach established here as a cure. The practical goals are to manage pain and help the cat maintain comfort and function. A veterinarian may combine environmental changes, weight and activity management, rehabilitation, and medication. The right mix depends on the individual cat; the available sources do not establish a head-to-head ranking of treatments.
Veterinarian-directed pain management
Solensia (frunevetmab) is FDA-approved in the United States to control pain associated with OA in cats. The FDA describes it as a monoclonal antibody injection approved to treat pain caused by feline osteoarthritis. Approval does not guarantee a particular result for an individual cat, and a veterinarian should determine whether it is appropriate. FDA approval summary, NADA 141-546 (January 13, 2022)

Do not give a cat human over-the-counter pain medicine. FDA guidance says only two NSAIDs are FDA-approved for cats, with approved uses described as controlling postoperative pain and inflammation; that does not mean an approved postoperative use is also an approval for long-term OA treatment. NSAIDs carry risks, so medication and dose decisions belong with the veterinarian. Do not start, stop, or change a prescribed medicine without consulting the veterinary team. Home changes that make daily tasks easier
Environmental support can reduce the effort needed to reach essentials. Options discussed by the FDA include a low-sided litter pan, raised food and water bowls, ramps or steps to reach high places, and soft bedding. VCA also discusses adapting the home for cats with OA. These changes support access and comfort; they do not reverse joint damage or treat the disease itself. VCA: Helping Your Cat with Osteoarthritis
Quick Recap
- Choose steps or a ramp that are stable and easy for your cat to use; observe whether your cat can approach and turn around comfortably.
- Set up a low-entry litter pan where your cat can reach it without navigating a difficult route.
- Place food, water, and a comfortable resting spot where the cat does not need to make a high jump.
What to bring up at the veterinary visit
- When you first noticed a change, whether it is worsening, and which activities are affected.
- Notes or videos showing walking, jumping, grooming, litter-box access, or reactions to touch.
- Any changes in appetite, weight, hiding, or temperament.
- Questions about pain control, weight or activity goals, rehabilitation, and home adaptations for your cat.
