No—don’t feed meatballs to cats. Common ingredients such as onion and garlic can poison cats, even when cooked or powdered. Meatballs may also contain too much salt or fat, or include bones or undercooked meat. If your cat has eaten one, check its ingredients and contact a veterinarian promptly if it contained onion or garlic—or if you cannot confirm what was in it.
Why meatballs can be dangerous for cats
Onion and garlic are the main concern
Onion, garlic, chives, and leeks belong to the Allium family. They are poisonous to cats whether raw, cooked, dried, powdered, or in liquid form. Cooking does not make them safe, and powdered seasonings can be especially concentrated. Garlic is the most toxic of the common Allium ingredients discussed by VCA.

These ingredients can cause stomach upset and damage red blood cells. Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, a veterinary toxicologist writing for Pet Poison Helpline, advises: “Never give food seasoned with onions or garlic to your cat.” VCA: Onion, Garlic, Chive, and Leek Poisoning in Cats (updated August 28, 2026).
Fat, salt, bones, and undercooked meat pose other risks
- Fat and grease: Fatty food and greasy drippings can cause vomiting, stomach pain, and depression in some pets, and may contribute to pancreatitis. ASPCA: What BBQ Staples are Dangerous to My Pet? (June 18, 2025).
- Salt: Excessive salt can cause increased thirst and urination, electrolyte problems, and more serious signs. The risk depends on how much was eaten. ASPCA Poison Control: People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets (accessed October 7, 2026).
- Raw or undercooked meat: It may carry bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli. ASPCA Poison Control and Cornell Feline Health Center caution against raw meat because of infectious-disease risks.
- Bones: Bones can injure or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract and may require surgery. ASPCA Poison Control.
What symptoms should you watch for?
After eating onion, garlic, or another Allium ingredient, a cat may develop vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, nausea, or abdominal pain. Red blood cell damage can cause weakness, pale gums, faster breathing, panting, or red-colored urine; kidney damage can follow the destruction of red blood cells. Signs and risk vary with the amount eaten. VCA’s veterinary guidance describes these possible effects.

Do not use the word “small” to decide that an exposure is safe. The reviewed veterinary sources do not provide a meatball-specific safe dose or toxicity threshold.
What to do if your cat ate a meatball
- Check what was in it. Look at the recipe, package, or ingredient list for onion, garlic, chives, leeks, powders, sauces, and salt. Estimate how much your cat ate and when.
- Call for case-specific advice. Contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly if onion or garlic was present, or if you cannot confirm the ingredients. Do not wait for symptoms after a suspected Allium exposure. VCA recommends calling a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline right away; ASPCA Poison Control advises noting the amount and contacting a veterinarian or poison control about suspected ingestion of hazardous foods.
- Seek urgent veterinary care if symptoms develop. This includes vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, pale gums, rapid or difficult breathing, panting, or red-colored urine.
Is there a safer alternative?
If you want to offer a meat treat, a narrow alternative is a small amount of fully cooked, boneless, unseasoned meat, given only occasionally. This avoids the specific risks of seasoning, bones, and raw or undercooked meat; it is not a complete diet, and the cited sources do not establish a universal portion size for plain meat.

For routine feeding, choose food that is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Cornell notes that treats are not nutritionally complete and gives a general guideline that treats should make up no more than 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories.
