Why marshmallows aren’t a suitable cat treat
Cats need a complete, balanced diet; marshmallows do not provide meaningful nutrition for them. Their size and chewy texture may also be a concern for a cat that has trouble chewing or breathing. There is no verified marshmallow portion that can be called safe for cats.

Cornell Feline Health Center guidance says treats are usually not nutritionally complete and should be occasional. Its general guideline is that treats make up 10–15% of a cat’s daily calories; that is general treat guidance, not a marshmallow allowance or a recommendation to feed candy. VCA likewise advises keeping treats to 10% of daily calories and choosing low-calorie options. Neither source provides a marshmallow-specific calorie limit or serving size. A veterinarian’s response to one specific case of a cat eating an ordinary marshmallow said that product contained nothing toxic and that the cat was likely to be fine. The answer also noted that eating a large amount could cause vomiting or diarrhea. This is a case-specific response, not proof that every marshmallow, quantity, or cat is safe. The available evidence does not establish a universal dose or a specific period for home monitoring.

Check the product and your cat
- Keep the wrapper, ingredient label, or recipe. Identify whether it was an ordinary marshmallow, a sugar-free or specialty product, or part of another food.
- Estimate how much your cat ate and when. Note whether any packaging or other ingredients may have been swallowed.
- Check whether your cat is showing symptoms, and tell the veterinary team what you found.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the product or amount is uncertain, it contained other ingredients, your cat has a medical or dietary condition, or symptoms appear. Cornell advises seeking veterinary help for suspected toxic ingestion and says not to induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. What about sugar-free, coated, or mixed marshmallow products?
Do not assume that all sugar-free marshmallows have the same ingredients, or that every sugar-free product contains a particular sweetener. Check the full label or recipe and share it with a veterinarian if you are unsure about an ingredient. Coatings, fillings, and foods mixed with marshmallows can introduce ingredients beyond the marshmallow itself, so the ordinary-marshmallow case response may not apply.

What to offer instead
Choose a cat-appropriate treat, such as a low-calorie cat treat, and check the package calories so it fits your cat’s daily calorie budget. A cat with a medical condition or special diet may need different choices; ask the veterinary team what is appropriate. Treats should remain occasional and should not displace a complete, balanced diet.

How strong is the evidence about marshmallows?
Marshmallow-specific evidence is limited: the direct veterinary response available concerns one ordinary-marshmallow exposure, and a separate secondary article was reviewed by a veterinarian. Cornell and VCA provide useful general guidance on feline nutrition, treats, and ingestion hazards, but neither establishes marshmallow-specific toxicology or a safe dose.
