Yes. Most cats can have a few plain, fully cooked peas occasionally; peas are not considered toxic, but they are optional and do not improve on a complete, balanced cat food. Serve them shelled, soft, and unseasoned, and avoid large or frequent portions.

Are peas safe for cats?

PetMD’s veterinarian-authored article says peas are not toxic and that a small occasional amount is unlikely to harm most cats. That guidance applies to plain peas, not preparations with salt, butter, oil, sauces, or seasonings. Pea pods and large pieces can pose a choking risk, so offer only shelled peas.

If your cat eats a small plain pea and seems well, the cited guidance suggests it is unlikely to cause harm. After offering peas for the first time, watch for vomiting or diarrhea and stop giving them if a reaction occurs. The sources do not set a pea-specific emergency threshold; contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe or your cat ate a substantial amount.

How should you prepare peas for a cat?

  1. Choose plain peas. Check the ingredients, particularly on canned or prepared products, and avoid added salt, butter, oil, sauces, and seasonings. The sources do not establish that one form—fresh, frozen, or canned—is safer than another.
  2. Cook until soft. PetMD recommends thoroughly cooking peas; its general guide also describes steaming, boiling, or baking them plain.
  3. Remove pods and mash or break up larger pieces. Let the peas cool before offering them. Do not serve them in a pod.
  4. Offer only a little, then observe. Peas are a treat, not a meal or a replacement for your cat’s regular food.

How many peas can cats eat?

There is no single clinically established pea portion in the cited sources. PetMD’s pea-specific article says less than one tablespoon per week is likely safe for most cats; its general human-food guide instead suggests three or four peas once or twice weekly. These are separate editorial recommendations, not results from a feeding trial, so neither should be treated as a universal dose. A few peas on occasion is the cautious approach.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s 2026 general treat guidance says treats should provide no more than 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories. PetMD’s pea-specific article mentions a 10 percent rule of thumb. These are broad limits for all treats, not an allowance to feed that proportion as peas; peas should remain an occasional, small extra.

Can peas benefit a cat’s diet?

Peas are not necessary for feline nutrition. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains that cats are obligate carnivores and rely on nutrients found in animal products. It recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian advises a home-formulated diet; treats are not nutritionally complete and should be given occasionally. Keep your cat’s complete food at the center of the diet rather than using peas to supplement or replace it.

What problems can peas cause?

Larger amounts or regular feeding may cause digestive upset, including gas, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. PetMD also cautions that frequent peas could dilute protein and amino acids in the diet, add excess phosphorus or carbohydrates, or trigger an allergy in some cats. Pods are less digestible than shelled peas and can be a choking hazard.

If your cat has a medical condition, follows a prescribed diet, or has a history of food reactions, ask your veterinarian before offering peas. Your veterinarian can advise whether any treat fits your cat’s specific diet.
