What if my cat ate pomegranate?
- Prevent further access. Remove the remaining fruit or product.
- Record the exposure. Note when it happened, the fruit part or product, the maximum amount your cat could have eaten, and the ingredient list or recipe. Keep the packaging if available.
- Check your cat’s condition. Cornell Feline Health Center lists vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blood in stool or urine, lethargy, appetite loss, irregular heartbeat, inability to urinate, and difficulty breathing among signs of poisoning.
- Call a veterinarian for case-specific advice. Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian immediately if a cat may have ingested a toxin. If your regular veterinarian is unavailable, contact an emergency clinic. Seek prompt help for significant or worsening symptoms.
Tell the veterinarian your cat’s weight and relevant health conditions, along with the exposure details. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. There is no established pomegranate amount that makes home monitoring universally safe.

Do seeds, rind, juice, and other pomegranate products differ?
Yes. The form matters, and evidence about one form does not establish the safety of another. An aril is the juice-containing tissue around a central seed.

If you want to give your cat something extra, choose a cat-appropriate commercial treat occasionally or offer a measured portion of the cat’s regular food. Cornell Feline Health Center gives 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily caloric intake as a rule of thumb for treats; this is general guidance, not a pomegranate allowance or an individualized prescription. Follow your veterinarian’s advice if your cat has a health condition or eats a prescription diet.
