Can Cats Eat Pizza? What to Do if Your Cat Takes a Bite

Pizza is not a suitable cat treat. Onion or garlic in sauce and seasoning can be toxic, while other ingredients may cause digestive upset. Here’s what to check if your cat ate some.

No—pizza is not a suitable food or treat for cats. A tiny accidental taste is not automatically an emergency, but pizza may contain onion or garlic in its sauce or seasoning, and those ingredients can be toxic to cats. If your cat ate pizza, check the ingredients and amount; seek veterinary advice if onion or garlic may be present, the taste was more than tiny, or your cat seems unwell.

Why pizza is a poor choice for cats

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises that it is generally best to avoid feeding cats human food. Pizza has no established nutritional benefit in the guidance reviewed, and its ingredients can create avoidable risks. Commercial cat food is formulated to provide an appropriate nutrient balance; treats should remain a small part of a cat’s diet. For cats with medical conditions or a veterinarian-directed diet, follow the veterinarian’s advice before offering any treat.

Which pizza ingredients matter most?

Ingredient or feature What the guidance says What to do
Onion and garlic These allium foods can be toxic to cats. ASPCA describes gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage, and notes that cats are more susceptible. Minced or powdered forms are concentrated. Neither source gives a pizza-specific safe amount. Check sauce, toppings, and seasoning for fresh, minced, or powdered onion and garlic. If either may have been present, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice.
Cheese Dairy may cause diarrhea or other digestive upset because pets have limited lactase. This is a digestive-intolerance concern, not evidence that a small amount of plain cheese is invariably poisonous. Do not offer it as a treat; monitor for digestive upset if your cat ate some.
Fatty meat toppings Cornell warns that eating fat from meat can predispose cats to pancreatitis. ASPCA says high-fat foods can cause vomiting and diarrhea and may contribute to pancreatitis in some pets. A bite does not predict an outcome. Consider what and how much was eaten when seeking advice, especially if the cat becomes ill.
Salt Excessive salt can cause increased thirst and urination; severe toxicity can include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, seizures, and death. The sources do not quantify the salt in a typical pizza slice or establish a safe amount for cats. Do not assume every bite approaches salt toxicity, but include the amount eaten when describing the exposure to a veterinarian.
Crust The sources do not assess pizza crust specifically or establish a safe quantity. They also do not support calling all crust toxic. Crust is still part of an unsuitable human food, and toppings or seasonings may change the risk.
Tomato sauce The sources do not establish ordinary ripe tomato sauce itself as a pizza-specific hazard. Plain sauce should not be conflated with tomato plants or unripe tomato fruit. Check sauce ingredients for onion and garlic rather than assuming the tomato sauce itself is the concern.

What to do if your cat ate pizza

  1. Remove the remaining pizza. Note what your cat ate and when, and estimate the amount as accurately as you can.
  2. Check the ingredients. Read the package or ask the restaurant about the sauce and seasoning, especially onion and garlic. Keep the packaging or ingredient details available.
  3. Get case-specific advice. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly if onion or garlic may have been present, the exposure was more than a tiny accidental taste, or your cat has symptoms. Risk depends on the substance and amount as well as the cat’s age, size, health, and metabolism; there is no pizza-specific threshold in the cited guidance.
  4. Watch for concerning signs. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, blood in stool or urine, seizures, or difficulty breathing warrant veterinary attention. Seek urgent help for severe or alarming symptoms.
  5. Do not try home treatment. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you to, and do not give human medication or home remedies.

Cornell lists Pet Poison Helpline at 800-213-6680 and ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Contact details, availability, and fees can change, so confirm current service information. A local veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic is also an appropriate contact.

How to judge the urgency

There is no universal amount of pizza that can be declared safe for every cat. When you call for advice, be ready to describe the ingredients, amount, and time eaten, along with your cat’s condition and relevant health or diet restrictions. Ingredient uncertainty matters: a plain-looking bite may still include onion or garlic in sauce or seasoning. A veterinary professional can assess the actual exposure rather than relying on a general slice-size rule.

What to offer instead

If you want to share a treat, choose a cat-appropriate treat and offer it in moderation. A treat does not prevent or treat harm from pizza. Cats on prescribed diets or with health conditions should follow their veterinarian’s guidance about any food outside their usual diet.
