A veterinarian-reviewed Catster article updated September 15, 2026, describes a small amount of plain original Smartwater as safe for a generally healthy cat. It reports that this product is vapor-distilled water with added electrolytes and no sugar or sodium, but that is secondary reporting, not confirmation of every current package formulation. “Flavored water” is not one consistent formula. Catster distinguishes plain original Smartwater from flavored, alkaline, and antioxidant products, and notes that flavored products may use different flavor enhancers. Its assessment of plain Smartwater should not be extended to those other formulations.

Read the ingredient list for the exact product. If you cannot verify what it contains, do not offer it to your cat; choose fresh water instead. The available evidence does not establish the safety of every flavor, brand, or formulation.
Can Smartwater or flavored water treat dehydration?
No. A human hydration product is not a substitute for veterinary assessment or feline fluid therapy. AAHA’s 2024 fluid-therapy guidance emphasizes that treatment depends on fluid movement, electrolyte balance, and the individual patient. Do not try to treat suspected dehydration by giving a cat human electrolyte water or relying on bottled water.

Signs that can accompany dehydration include tacky gums, lethargy, loss of appetite, weakness, sunken eyes, increased heart rate, and reduced skin elasticity, according to Catster. These signs warrant prompt veterinary advice, particularly if your cat seems unwell. - Try a different bowl type or water temperature; preferences vary between cats.
- Consider a pet fountain if your cat is interested in running water. It is an option, not a guarantee that every cat will drink more.

For cats with chronic kidney disease, ISFM guidance recommends free access to good-quality water and offering varied sources, including running water or flavored water. It also discusses wet food and, where appropriate, adding water to food while maintaining nutrient intake. Contact your veterinarian if your cat appears dehydrated or unwell, is not drinking enough despite routine changes, or has a persistent change in drinking. A sick cat’s hydration needs cannot be safely determined by choosing a human bottled or electrolyte drink.
