Can Cats Eat Quail Eggs? How to Serve Them Safely

A small amount of plain, fully cooked quail egg may be an occasional treat for a healthy cat, but raw egg is unsafe and quail-specific portions are not established.

A healthy cat can likely have a small amount of plain, fully cooked quail egg as an occasional treat. Do not feed raw quail eggs, and keep your cat’s complete and balanced food as the foundation of its diet. Veterinary guidance discusses eggs generally—not a proven quail-egg portion, schedule, or specific health benefit—so offer one sparingly and ask your veterinarian first if your cat has a medical condition or eats a prescription diet.

Can cats eat quail eggs?

General veterinary guidance says cats can eat small amounts of plain, cooked egg. Applying that guidance to quail eggs is a cautious extrapolation: the sources do not establish a quail-specific safe serving size or feeding frequency. An occasional small taste is the conservative choice, not a nutritional requirement.

Keep treats from displacing a nutritionally complete feline diet. The yolk adds fat and calories, and extra food can upset calorie balance or cause gastrointestinal upset. Ask your veterinarian before adding egg if your cat has a health condition or is on a prescription diet.

Are quail eggs nutritious for cats?

Eggs provide animal-source protein and fat; they also contain taurine. That does not make quail eggs necessary as a supplement. For a cat eating complete and balanced food, supplements are generally unnecessary unless a veterinarian identifies a deficiency.

The available guidance does not establish quail-specific nutrient comparisons or demonstrated feline health benefits. There is no basis here to claim that quail eggs improve a cat’s coat, digestion, immunity, allergies, or another condition, or that they are nutritionally superior to chicken eggs.

Raw or cooked: which is safer?

Option Practical guidance
Raw quail egg Avoid it. Raw eggs can carry pathogens, including Salmonella. FDA guidance also warns about H5N1 risks associated with uncooked animal-derived products.
Plain, fully cooked quail egg The lower-risk choice under general egg and food-safety guidance. Cook thoroughly, cool it, and serve a small amount plain.
Seasoned, fried, or preserved egg Do not add salt, seasoning, butter, oil, sauces, or brine. These preparations are not the plain, cooked option recommended here.

Do not assume a small egg or a particular source is pathogen-free. CDC food-safety guidance says appropriate cooking kills bacteria and avian influenza viruses; that is general food-safety advice, not a quail-egg recipe or cat-specific feeding study. CDC egg safety guidance and the FDA’s H5N1 food-safety guidance explain the relevant risks.

How to prepare a quail egg for a cat

  1. Cook the egg thoroughly; do not serve it raw or runny.
  2. Let it cool before offering it.
  3. Serve a small amount plain, alongside the cat’s regular food. Avoid salt, spices, butter, oil, sauces, and brine.
  4. Keep the serving occasional and small. Do not treat the tablespoon example sometimes given for egg white generally as a quail-egg portion: it is not a quail-specific recommendation.

PetMD’s general egg guidance describes plain boiled or scrambled egg in small amounts and mentions about one tablespoon of egg white as a possible supplement. That example is not a validated serving size for quail eggs or an instruction to feed that amount. PetMD’s guidance on cats and eggs provides the general context.

What if a cat eats raw quail egg?

If your cat eats raw egg, monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or other concerning signs and contact a veterinarian if they occur. Food history alone cannot diagnose illness. FDA guidance notes that cats exposed to potentially infected birds or animal products can become seriously ill; discuss a concerning exposure with a veterinarian rather than trying to assess the cause yourself. See FDA information on H5N1 in birds and other animals.

When to check with your veterinarian

  • Your cat has a medical condition or follows a prescription diet.
  • You are considering adding egg regularly or using it as a supplement.
  • Your cat develops concerning symptoms after eating egg or another animal product.

For cats eating a complete and balanced diet, an extra food should not replace that diet or be used to treat a suspected deficiency. ASPCA nutrition guidance discusses supplements and feline diets; VCA’s cat-feeding guidance covers feeding fundamentals.
