Cats may eat rat poison, and even a suspected exposure needs prompt veterinary advice. Do not wait for symptoms or try to identify bait by its color or shape. Keep the product package or receipt if you have it, then contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control right away.
What to do if your cat may have eaten rat poison
- Stop further access. Move your cat away from the bait and prevent other pets from reaching it.
- Call for professional help immediately. Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. Ask about current availability and any fees. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Share what you know. Provide the product name or active ingredient, the estimated amount, and when exposure may have happened. Keep the package, label, receipt, or pest-control product record available. If you cannot find it, call anyway; an unknown product is not a reason to delay.
- Do not try home treatment unless instructed. Do not induce vomiting or give food, medication, charcoal, or a home remedy without directions from a veterinary professional.
- Use extra caution if zinc phosphide may be involved. If your cat vomits, avoid contact with the vomit and get professional guidance. This ingredient can produce phosphine gas in the stomach, and the gas may also be harmful to people.
This is emergency guidance, not a substitute for veterinary assessment. There is no single home-treatment rule that applies to every rodenticide.

Why the active ingredient matters
Rat poisons are not all the same. ASPCA Poison Control describes several types of rodenticide and their differing hazards. Bait appearance cannot reliably identify the ingredient, so a label or product record can help a veterinary professional decide what to do.

| Rodenticide type | Potential effect described by ASPCA |
|---|---|
| Anticoagulants | Disrupt blood clotting; internal bleeding may not appear until several days after ingestion. |
| Bromethalin | Can injure the nervous system, with signs such as weakness, tremors, or seizures. Signs may take one to five days to appear; ASPCA says there is no specific antidote. |
| Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) | Can damage the kidneys and soft tissues. |
| Zinc phosphide | Can produce phosphine gas in the stomach, with gastrointestinal and neurologic effects. |
| Other baits, including corn-gluten products | Effects vary; ASPCA describes possible gastrointestinal upset or blockage among outcomes associated with rodenticide cases. |
These descriptions are not a way to diagnose a cat at home or predict its outcome. A cat that looks normal may still need urgent assessment, and treatment should not be inferred from the ingredient alone.

How to reduce the risk around cats
The safest place for bait is one your cat cannot access. Follow the exact product label and use a prevention-first approach; a bait station can reduce access when selected and used as directed, but it does not make bait safe where a cat can reach it.
- Store unused pesticides securely, away from pets and food, including pet food.
- Do not place bait where a cat can reach it. If the proposed location is accessible, choose another control method or location.
- Use the station supplied with the product when the label requires it, and follow all label directions for the product, placement, and setting.
- Record where bait was placed and how much was used; check locations regularly and remove any moved or accessible bait.
- Promptly remove and dispose of dead rodents. EPA warns that pets and wildlife can be poisoned by eating rodents that consumed certain rodenticides.
- If you hire a pest-control professional, explain that cats live in the home. Ask about active ingredients, placement, pet access, cleanup, and monitoring for dead rodents.
Alternatives when bait placement is not secure
If a cat could reach a proposed bait location, do not place bait there. Consider exclusion, sanitation, or traps positioned where pets cannot access them. EPA identifies lethal and live traps as alternatives to poison bait. The appropriate approach depends on the infestation and the home; no active ingredient should be treated as universally safe for cats.
