Yes. True lilies (Lilium) and daylilies (Hemerocallis) can cause acute, potentially fatal kidney injury in cats. Chewing any plant part, grooming pollen from fur or paws, or drinking vase water may be enough to warrant concern. If your cat may have been exposed, call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic now—even if your cat seems fine. Do not wait for symptoms or delay care to identify the plant.

Which plants called lilies are dangerous to cats?

The common name “lily” does not reliably identify a plant’s risk. The key kidney-risk groups are true lilies in the genus Lilium and daylilies in the genus Hemerocallis. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine names Easter, Stargazer, and Asiatic lilies among hazardous true lilies; daylilies are also associated with kidney failure in cats. See UC Davis’s lily guidance and Pet Poison Helpline’s lily overview.

Plant commonly called a lily Risk described by veterinary sources Exposure and response
True lilies (Lilium), including Easter, Stargazer, and Asiatic lilies Can cause acute kidney injury, which may progress to kidney failure. Plant parts, pollen, and vase water are potential exposure sources. Contact a veterinarian immediately after suspected exposure.
Daylilies (Hemerocallis) Can also cause kidney failure in cats. Contact a veterinarian immediately after suspected exposure.
Peace lilies and calla lilies Not members of Lilium and not associated with the same fatal kidney-failure pattern in the cited guidance, but they can still harm cats, including mouth and gastrointestinal irritation. Seek veterinary advice if your cat chews one or develops symptoms.
Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) A separate hazard associated with heart effects, including irregular heartbeat and low blood pressure. Contact a veterinarian promptly after suspected exposure.

These distinctions come from UC Davis and Pet Poison Helpline. Do not classify a plant as safe based on its appearance or common name alone.

How can a cat be exposed?

A cat does not have to eat a whole flower. Veterinary guidance identifies several possible routes:

#1 Best Overall

  • Chewing or swallowing a leaf, stem, petal, or other plant material.
  • Getting pollen on the fur or paws and then swallowing it while grooming.
  • Drinking water from a vase containing cut lilies.

UC Davis, Pet Poison Helpline, and Cornell Feline Health Center describe these exposure concerns; see Cornell’s feline health information on lilies and ASPCA’s lily plant guidance. If exposure is possible, treat it as urgent rather than trying to estimate how much your cat encountered.

What should you do if your cat may have contacted a lily?

  1. Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Explain that the plant may be a true lily or daylily, and describe whether your cat chewed it, contacted pollen, or drank vase water. Do not wait for signs of illness.
  2. Bring a clear photo or the plant if you can do so without delaying care. A veterinarian can use it to help identify the plant. Do not postpone the call or trip while trying to identify it yourself.
  3. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian directs you. The appropriate response depends on the individual case and should be managed by the veterinary team.

At the clinic, care may include decontamination, such as inducing vomiting when appropriate, activated charcoal, intravenous fluids, kidney-function testing, and monitoring urine output. Dialysis may be considered in severe cases. These are veterinary interventions, not steps to attempt at home. Details are described by UC Davis and Pet Poison Helpline.

What symptoms can occur, and when?

Early signs listed by UC Davis include vomiting, lethargy, drooling, and loss of appetite. Increased urination and dehydration may appear 12–24 hours after ingestion; later kidney failure can result in no urine being produced. UC Davis warns that kidney failure can become fatal within 36–72 hours without appropriate treatment. These are clinical timing estimates, not a window in which it is safe to wait. Seek veterinary care as soon as exposure is suspected.

How does timing affect the outlook?

Outcome varies, and the available guidance does not establish a safe amount of exposure. UC Davis states that delayed treatment—more than 18 hours after ingestion—generally leads to irreversible kidney failure. Early professional assessment offers a better chance of addressing the exposure, so a cat that appears normal still needs prompt veterinary advice.

How can you prevent lily exposure?

UC Davis advises keeping true lilies and daylilies out of homes with cats and not planting them in gardens cats can access. Because common names can be confusing, check a plant’s identity before bringing it into a cat-accessible space; if you cannot confidently identify it, do not assume it is safe.
