Are rice cakes safe for cats?
No reviewed veterinary source specifically tests rice cakes as cat treats, so there is no evidence-backed serving size or blanket safety guarantee. VCA advises avoiding salty snack foods and choosing unseasoned, low-calorie foods when giving cats people food as treats. Applied to rice cakes, that makes a plain, unseasoned product a more cautious choice than a salty or flavored one—but it does not make rice cakes an approved or nutritionally useful cat treat.

Salt
Salt ingestion can cause sodium poisoning in pets, according to Pet Poison Helpline’s kitchen-toxin guidance. It does not provide a rice-cake-specific harmful dose, so do not use a guessed threshold to decide whether an exposure is safe.
How treats fit into a cat’s diet
VCA recommends keeping treats to no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calorie intake; the other 90% should come from complete and balanced food. This is a limit for all treats and snacks combined, not a rice-cake serving recommendation. No rice-cake serving size is established.

For a reward, a portion of your cat’s regular food or a commercially prepared cat treat is a more suitable option to consider. Check the treat’s calories and count them toward the daily limit. If your cat eats a prescription diet or has a diagnosed health condition, ask the veterinary care team before adding any treat.
My cat ate a rice cake—what should I do?
- Check the package. Note the ingredients and whether the rice cake was salted or flavored.
- Consider the exposure. The available guidance gives no rice-cake-specific dose that can be called safe or toxic. If the amount was substantial or an ingredient concerns you, contact your veterinarian or a poison-information service promptly.
- Watch for a reaction. If symptoms develop, contact your veterinarian. A detailed diet history—including what your cat ate and when symptoms began—can help the veterinarian assess a possible food reaction.
- Do not try home treatment without direction. Pet Poison Helpline cautions that inducing vomiting or giving home remedies is not always safe. Get advice from a veterinary professional instead.
Rice cakes are not a remedy for stomach upset
Do not use a rice cake to treat vomiting or other digestive problems. VCA says home-prepared chicken and rice is not complete and balanced for cats and dogs and is no longer the best general recommendation for a bland diet. If your veterinarian recommends a bland diet, clarify exactly what to feed and for how long.
