Keep every session supervised and move forward only while both animals remain relaxed. Stop if the cat stalks or chases, or if the rabbit shows fear or stress. Some pairs need permanent separation.
Before you begin, let the rabbit settle
A new home can be stressful for a rabbit. Give the rabbit time to feel secure and establish a safe area before introducing the cat. House Rabbit Society notes that animals may need days, weeks, or months to become comfortable with one another’s movement and scent; this is a range of possible adjustment times, not a promised schedule. House Rabbit Society’s guidance on rabbits and cats emphasizes proceeding at the animals’ pace.

Set up the rabbit’s usual food, water, litter area, and hiding place before starting. The rabbit should be able to choose whether to watch the cat or withdraw, rather than being held in place or brought nose-to-nose.
Choose a protected first-meeting setup
Begin with visual access through a sturdy, spacious enclosure or exercise pen that prevents the cat from reaching through. Put a hide or box inside so the rabbit can get out of sight. A barrier supports a cautious introduction, but it does not make direct or unsupervised contact safe.

Guidance differs on the best location. Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund says introductions are usually easier on territory where the rabbit is established; an Animal Welfare Association handout recommends a neutral space because rabbits can be territorial. Neither location is a universal rule. Choose a setup that lets the rabbit retreat and allows you to remove the cat immediately.
- Rabbit-established area: can give the rabbit familiar surroundings and a known retreat.
- Neutral area: may avoid putting either animal directly in the other’s territory.
Whichever location you use, keep the rabbit secure, prevent reach-through, and do not force contact. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund describes the goal as: “The goal of introducing a cat to rabbits is that the rabbits feel confident and the cat does not feel predatory.” Read its guide to rabbits living with other pets.

Run short, calm sessions and follow behavior
Choose a calm time for the cat. Start with the cat outside the rabbit’s secure enclosure and allow both animals to observe from a distance. Do not coax the rabbit toward the cat or allow the cat to paw through the barrier. Keep the cat under control so you can interrupt and remove it at once.
- Begin with protected visual contact. Keep the barrier between the animals and make sure the rabbit can hide.
- Watch both animals throughout. Look for calm, ordinary behavior rather than simply the absence of an immediate chase.
- End the session while things remain calm. Separate them and give the rabbit access to its safe area.
- Repeat at the animals’ pace. Continue only if both stay relaxed; do not advance according to a fixed number of days or sessions.
A rabbit that can approach or withdraw by choice has more control over distance. A cat that fixes on, stalks, or tries to chase the rabbit is not ready for closer contact. If the animals do not remain calm, return to separation rather than pushing ahead.

Know when to stop and seek veterinary advice
Interrupt stalking, chasing, or other predatory behavior immediately. End the session if the rabbit freezes, repeatedly hides, seems nervous or aggressive, becomes lethargic, or loses interest in food. Agriculture Victoria also lists flattened ears, a hunched posture, jumpiness, rapid or heavy breathing, grooming changes, and changes in eating or toileting as possible stress signs. Its rabbit welfare guidance advises seeking veterinary advice promptly when stress signs are detected.
Hiding can be normal, so consider the rabbit’s behavior in context. Frequent fearful hiding or being unable to retreat is a reason to stop and reassess the setup. If concerning behavior or appetite changes continue, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Take any scratch or bite seriously. A cat’s claws or mouth can injure a rabbit; Rabbit.org warns that even a playful swat or bite can cause infection. Separate the animals and consult a veterinarian about an injury.
Keep them separated whenever you cannot supervise
Do not leave a cat and rabbit alone together, even after they appear familiar. Scottish Government guidance states: “Never leave your rabbits alone with a cat or dog, even if they are familiar with each other.” Keep them in separate, secure areas whenever you cannot actively supervise an interaction. A pen can help with early visual introductions, but it does not remove the need for supervision. See the Scottish Government’s pet rabbit welfare guidance.

Can cats and rabbits live together?
Some cats and rabbits may become accustomed to one another, but a peaceful introduction cannot be guaranteed. Cats retain predatory behavior, and a running or hopping rabbit can trigger a chase. Progress only when both animals appear calm; some pairs are not suitable for direct contact and may need permanent separation.
