Plain sesame seeds are not identified as toxic to cats in Cornell’s cited hazard guidance, but that does not establish a safe serving size. Sesame is not a useful treat to add to a cat’s diet. If your cat ate a sesame-containing food, check all its ingredients and contact your veterinarian if the food contained a potentially harmful ingredient or your cat seems unwell.
Can cats eat sesame seeds?
A cat that accidentally swallows a small amount of plain sesame is not necessarily in danger, but the available primary veterinary guidance does not set a sesame-specific safe dose. Secondary sources describe small amounts of plain sesame as low risk; that is limited guidance, not a vet-approved portion recommendation.

Cornell’s list of example toxic foods includes grapes, onions, raisins, avocados, foods containing xylitol, and chocolate, but it does not name sesame. An omission from that list is not proof that sesame is safe in any amount. Sesame is not a necessary part of a cat’s diet, so there is no reason to offer it deliberately.
Why sesame is not a useful cat treat
Cats are obligate carnivores and need a diet supplying their specific nutrients, including amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Cornell recommends complete and balanced commercial food for most cats; homemade diets should be formulated with veterinary guidance, particularly when medically indicated. Sesame seeds do not replace those nutritional needs.

Cornell’s general treat guidance says treats should be occasional and usually remain within 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories. That is a ceiling for treats overall—not a sesame serving size, nor a reason to use sesame as a treat. Cornell’s feeding guidance explains the role of balanced food and treats.
My cat ate a sesame seed bun. Is that OK?
The seeds are only one part of the question. A bun or other prepared food may contain additional ingredients that matter more than the sesame. Check the complete ingredient label, estimate how much your cat ate, and note when it happened. If the food contains an ingredient known to be harmful, or you are unsure about the ingredients or amount, call your veterinarian promptly and keep the packaging available.

Cornell advises owners concerned about a possible toxic ingestion to call a veterinarian immediately and, when possible, provide a sample or label of the substance. Can cats eat tahini or sesame oil?
The cited primary veterinary sources do not establish safe amounts for tahini or sesame oil either. These are different preparations from plain seeds, and foods made with them can contain other ingredients. Do not assume that a product is safe because it contains sesame; check its full label and seek veterinary advice if your cat ate a concerning amount, an ingredient of concern, or is showing signs of illness.

What should I do if my cat ate sesame seeds?
- Check what was eaten. Determine whether it was plain seeds or a prepared food, and read the full ingredient list if available.
- Estimate the amount and timing. This helps your veterinarian assess the exposure.
- Call your veterinarian if you are concerned. Cornell recommends calling immediately when you think your cat has ingested something toxic; share the label or a sample when possible.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to.
If your cat seems unwell, contact a veterinarian rather than relying on the fact that sesame itself was the apparent ingredient. Cornell’s advice concerns suspected toxic ingestion broadly; it does not provide a sesame-specific treatment protocol.

If you found small pale objects in your cat’s fur, bedding, near the tail, or in feces, the question may not be about food. Dried tapeworm segments can resemble sesame seeds, according to Cornell’s guidance on gastrointestinal parasites. Have a veterinarian evaluate the objects rather than assuming they are spilled food.
