For a healthy cat, start with food labeled for cats and the right life stage, then confirm that its label says it is complete and balanced for that stage. Use calories and feeding directions as a starting point, assess the manufacturer’s nutrition and quality-control practices, and adjust portions to your cat. Ask a veterinarian before choosing a therapeutic diet or making a decision shaped by a medical condition.
What to check first on a cat food label
Confirm it is for cats and the right life stage
In the United States, look for the product’s nutritional adequacy statement. It identifies whether the food is complete and balanced and the life stage it is intended to support. AAFCO categories include growth, adult maintenance, gestation/lactation, and all life stages. Match the statement to your cat rather than relying on packaging imagery or broad marketing language. AAFCO’s label guide explains what to look for; its food-selection guide discusses choosing for life stage and individual needs.

Understand “complete and balanced”
AAFCO defines “complete” as containing all required nutrients and “balanced” as having those nutrients in the correct ratios. A label may say the food is formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles, or that feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate its nutritional adequacy. These are different ways a product can support its adequacy statement; neither wording proves that it is the best choice for every cat. The FDA’s explanation of complete-and-balanced pet food describes these routes.

Keep treats and supplemental foods in their proper role
Products labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding are not meant to be the sole diet. Treats and snacks are also typically not complete-and-balanced foods. If a product will make up your cat’s regular meals, check that its adequacy statement supports that use.

How to compare candidate foods
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Species and adequacy | Food intended for cats, with a complete-and-balanced statement if it will be the staple diet. |
| Life stage | An adequacy statement that matches the cat’s stage, such as growth or adult maintenance, or an appropriate all-life-stages statement. |
| Calories and portions | Calorie content and practical feeding directions. Treat the label’s feeding amount as a starting estimate, not a guaranteed portion for every cat. |
| How adequacy is substantiated | Whether the label refers to formulation against nutrient profiles or feeding tests using AAFCO procedures. |
| Manufacturer expertise and controls | Information about qualified nutrition professionals, formulation experience, quality-control procedures, product research, and access to nutrient information. |
| Format and moisture | Whether the food is wet or dry, and whether moisture differences have been accounted for when comparing nutrient percentages. |
Look beyond ingredient names and marketing claims
An ingredient list can tell you what ingredients are named, but it does not establish their quality or the quality of the finished diet. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee’s pet-food selection guidelines recommend considering questions about the people and processes behind a food: who formulates it, what expertise they have, what quality controls are used, and what product research or nutrient information the manufacturer can provide.
Words such as “premium” and “holistic” are marketing language, not proof that a food is nutritionally adequate. AAFCO also says it does not approve, certify, or endorse individual pet foods, so a claim suggesting AAFCO endorsement should not replace checking the actual label.

Set portions for your individual cat
Feeding directions and calorie information give you a starting point. Your cat’s needs can differ with life stage, health, sterilization status, activity, and body condition. Monitor body condition and adjust portions as needed rather than assuming a package’s suggested amount is exact for every animal. If you are unsure how much to feed, ask your veterinarian for guidance.
Wet or dry food: compare like with like
Neither wet nor dry food is established as a universal winner for all cats. The practical comparison starts with the label and the cat’s needs. Guaranteed-analysis percentages are expressed “as fed,” while nutrient profiles use a dry-matter basis. Because canned and dry foods can contain very different amounts of moisture, their nutrient percentages cannot be compared directly without accounting for that difference. The FDA’s guide to complete-and-balanced pet food explains the distinction.

When a veterinarian should guide the choice
Talk with a veterinarian if your cat has a medical condition, special nutritional needs, or may need a therapeutic diet. A food appropriate for a healthy cat is not automatically suitable for a cat whose health affects nutritional requirements.
