Human tuna is not complete cat food and should never replace a balanced diet. Tuna is unnecessary, and you can skip it; ask your veterinarian before offering it, especially to a kitten or a cat with a health condition or special diet.
Why tuna is not a complete cat food
Cats need food formulated to provide the nutrients required for their life stage. Commercial cat foods are developed to provide a balanced diet, as Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains in its feeding guidance. Human tuna is not formulated to do that job.
A tuna-containing cat food can be complete and balanced because the whole recipe is formulated for cats. That is different from feeding human tuna from a can or pouch as a main food.
Routine or substantial tuna feeding can displace complete food and contribute to nutritional imbalance. PetMD notes concerns including vitamin E deficiency and steatitis, as well as excess calories, possible fish allergy, and mercury exposure. Cornell also notes that some cats eating canned fish products meant for humans have developed potentially serious neurological disorders. These concerns do not mean that one accidental bite necessarily causes harm.

How often can a cat have tuna?
Veterinary sources do not agree that tuna should be offered even occasionally. VCA Animal Hospitals advises against feeding cats tuna as a treat. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guidance is more permissive: Sandra C. Mitchell, DVM, DABVP, recommends no more than 1 tablespoon of plain, unseasoned, cooked human-grade tuna once a week. That is PetMD’s recommendation, not a universal consensus.
Tuna is not necessary for a cat’s diet, and avoiding it is a reasonable choice. If you decide to follow the more permissive guidance, discuss it with your veterinarian and keep the amount small; do not make tuna a routine topping or substitute for meals.

Mercury: tuna types are not interchangeable
Mercury is one reason veterinary guidance cautions against feeding tuna regularly. PetMD advises avoiding albacore because of its higher mercury levels. This advice does not establish a safe feline mercury dose, and human fish-consumption recommendations should not be converted into a cat feeding schedule.
What tuna should cats avoid?
- Albacore tuna: PetMD advises avoiding it because of its higher mercury levels.
- Seasoned or flavored tuna: PetMD advises choosing tuna without added spices or flavorings. Do not share mixed dishes or sauces as a shortcut for giving tuna.
- Raw or undercooked tuna: If offering fresh tuna under PetMD’s guidance, cook it thoroughly without butter, oil, or spices, then cool it before offering a small amount.
- Tuna as a meal replacement: Human tuna is not a balanced feline diet, even when plain or cooked.
For canned tuna, PetMD prefers tuna packed in water rather than oil, with no added spices or flavorings. Water packing or cooking does not make human tuna nutritionally complete or suitable as a regular food.

Better options for a tuna-loving cat
The everyday choice should be a complete-and-balanced cat food appropriate for your cat’s life stage. A tuna-flavored cat food can differ from human tuna because the full recipe is formulated to provide balanced nutrition.
If you want to offer a reward, consider a cat-specific treat and follow its feeding directions. Treats should not replace meals or be used to correct a nutritional deficiency.

Cats who need extra caution
Do not offer human tuna casually to:
- Kittens: PetMD advises waiting until a cat is at least one year old before offering human tuna. VCA warns that regular tuna feeding is dangerous for kittens, which need balanced kitten food and may hold out for treats.
- Cats on veterinary-prescribed diets: Ask the veterinary team before adding unplanned foods.
- Cats with health problems or food sensitivities: Advice for a healthy adult cat may not apply to them.
- Cats refusing their normal food in favor of tuna: Do not try to solve persistent food refusal by adding tuna; seek veterinary guidance.
When to call the veterinarian
Ask your veterinarian for advice if your cat has eaten a substantial amount of tuna, has been getting tuna repeatedly, seems unwell, or is refusing normal food. Seek veterinary guidance before offering human tuna to a kitten or to a cat with a medical condition, food sensitivity, or prescription diet.

Can kittens eat tuna?
Keep kittens on complete-and-balanced kitten food and do not offer them human tuna. PetMD advises waiting until a cat is at least one year old, and VCA warns against regular tuna feeding to kittens.
How much tuna can I give my cat?
Recommendations differ. PetMD’s Sandra C. Mitchell, DVM, DABVP, suggests no more than 1 tablespoon of plain, unseasoned, cooked human-grade tuna once a week; VCA recommends no tuna treats. Treat PetMD’s amount as that source’s guidance, not a universal safe-dose rule, and ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your cat.
My cat ate some tuna—should I panic?
A single bite is not the same as regular or substantial tuna feeding, and it does not necessarily mean your cat will become ill. Contact your veterinarian if your cat ate a substantial amount, seems unwell, or is refusing normal food.
The bottom line
Human tuna is not a complete cat food and should never replace meals. Some veterinary guidance permits a tiny occasional amount for a healthy adult cat, while other guidance recommends avoiding tuna treats altogether. Skipping it is fine; if you choose to offer it, ask your veterinarian and follow the more permissive source’s advice for plain, unseasoned tuna in a very small amount.
