1. Cultiva flores con néctar
Para la mayoría de los lectores, este es el punto de partida más fiable para atraer y alimentar mariposas adultas. Las flores ofrecen néctar y también una superficie donde posarse mientras comen. Combina especies apropiadas para tu clima y jardín, con distintas formas de flor y floraciones escalonadas para que haya alimento durante más tiempo.
- Consulta una guía regional, un vivero especializado o una entidad local para elegir plantas nectaríferas adecuadas a las mariposas de tu zona.
- Combina flores planas o agrupaciones de flores pequeñas, que pueden facilitar que las mariposas se posen y accedan al néctar.
- Procura que distintas plantas florezcan en momentos diferentes de la temporada.
Las listas de plantas varían según la región, el clima y las especies locales. No hay una selección universal que convenga a todos los jardines.
2. Ofrece fruta madura o demasiado madura
Algunas mariposas visitan fruta podrida o demasiado madura, pero muchas no lo hacen. La fruta es un complemento y no sustituye las flores. Puedes poner una pequeña cantidad en un platillo o comedero de plataforma, en un rincón del jardín; retírala o repónla cuando haga falta.

- Coloca la fruta en un recipiente estable y poco profundo.
- Revisa el recipiente con regularidad, retira la fruta sucia o con moho y limpia el recipiente antes de reponerla.
- Si el agua de lluvia se acumula en el comedero, retírala.
La North American Butterfly Association describe comederos de fruta como una opción suplementaria y advierte que su experiencia no garantiza que todas las especies los visiten. No hace falta añadir cerveza u otras mezclas para atraer mariposas.
3. Mantén una zona húmeda o un charco poco profundo
Algunas mariposas visitan el barro, el suelo húmedo o los charcos para obtener agua y sales. Esta zona complementa el néctar y la fruta: no es una fuente principal de energía ni atrae a todas las especies.

Si quieres apoyar el ciclo completo, combina flores nectaríferas con plantas hospedadoras adecuadas a las especies locales.
Protege a las mariposas y sus orugas
Evita los pesticidas de amplio espectro siempre que sea posible: pueden perjudicar tanto a mariposas adultas como a orugas. No supongas que un producto es inocuo por ser «natural» u «orgánico»; sigue las instrucciones de su etiqueta. También conviene preguntar si las plantas compradas recibieron tratamientos que puedan afectar a las orugas.

Algunas especies visitan fruta madura o podrida, pero no todas. Puedes ofrecerla como complemento y mantener limpio el recipiente.
¿Para qué sirve un charco poco profundo en un jardín de mariposas?
Algunas mariposas visitan suelo húmedo o charcos para obtener agua y sales. No reemplaza el néctar y no atraerá a todas las especies.

No necesariamente. Las orugas comen tejido vegetal y muchas necesitan plantas hospedadoras específicas. Elige plantas adecuadas a las mariposas de tu región.
