Marijuana and THC are toxic exposures, and giving a cat smoke, an edible, CBD-with-THC, or another human drug can cause a medical emergency. If you meant a playful response to a scent, use supervised plant enrichment instead: catnip, silver vine, Tatarian honeysuckle, or valerian may trigger temporary behaviors in some cats, but they are not cannabis and none is guaranteed or universally safe.
What “get your cat high” should mean—and what it must not mean
Online, “high” is often shorthand for a cat rolling, rubbing, chasing, or becoming unusually relaxed after smelling a plant. That is different from drug intoxication. A cat should never be deliberately exposed to THC, marijuana smoke, cannabis edibles, concentrated oils, or human medicines to alter its mood.

The ASPCA classifies marijuana as toxic to cats. Reported signs include vomiting, poor coordination, sleepiness or unusual excitation, hypersalivation, dilated pupils, low blood pressure, low body temperature, seizures, coma, and, rarely, death. Merck Veterinary Manual’s review (updated February 2026) describes gastrointestinal and neurologic effects and says treatment is generally supportive care. These are poisoning concerns, not recreational effects.
Regulation also does not make a product a safe feline intoxicant. Merck states that the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved THC, cannabidiol (CBD) with THC, or full-spectrum cannabis products for veterinary patients. In the United States, marijuana and THC remain Schedule I drugs under the Drug Enforcement Administration, while decriminalization and other legal rules vary by state. Those statements are US-specific and do not establish the status of every hemp-derived animal product in every jurisdiction.

The four plants below are enrichment choices that can produce a short-lived behavioral response in a willing cat. They are not “legal highs,” medical treatments, or a substitute for a veterinarian’s advice.
1. Catnip: the familiar scent, with real limits
How it works
Catnip is Nepeta cataria. Pet Poison Helpline identifies the plant’s nepetalactone as the compound involved in the characteristic response. A cat may sniff, rub its face on, roll, sprint, or briefly become very animated; another may become quiet or show no reaction at all. Pet Poison Helpline reports that about 70% of adult cats respond to catnip scent. Treat that as the source’s estimate, not a guarantee for your cat or a universal population statistic.
The response typically lasts around 10–15 minutes, after which many cats temporarily lose interest. Kittens may not respond, and an individual cat can respond differently from one exposure to the next.

Forms and a cautious introduction
- Use a small amount of loose dried catnip in a durable toy or a commercially manufactured toy whose ingredients are clearly listed.
- Offer the toy on the floor and let the cat choose whether to approach. Do not force the scent onto the face or into the mouth.
- Remove the item when it is shredded, leaking plant material, or being chewed apart.
Why “safe” is too strong
ASPCA’s catnip listing classifies catnip as toxic to cats and names vomiting and diarrhea among possible signs. The same source notes that some cats become sedated while others become stimulated. That means catnip is not a license to feed large quantities or to assume every cat will tolerate ingestion. If your cat vomits, develops diarrhea, appears weak, or behaves abnormally after exposure, stop access and call your veterinarian.
2. Silver vine: an alternative for cats that ignore catnip
What the evidence supports
Silver vine is one of the plant attractants examined alongside catnip in a 2017 paper in BMC Veterinary Research. The study assessed feline responsiveness to several plants; it does not prove that every silver-vine product is safe, effective, or appropriate for every cat. Some cats that ignore catnip may investigate silver vine, while others show no interest.
Common forms and supervision
Silver vine is sold as sticks, dried material, or an ingredient in toys. A stick can invite chewing, so inspect it for splinters, breakage, mold, dyes, glues, or added flavorings. Choose products with a transparent ingredient list and remove loose fragments. A toy that contains the plant is preferable to scattering a large quantity where a cat can swallow it.

Observe the actual response: rubbing and play are enrichment behaviors; they are not evidence of intoxication or a calming treatment. Ask a veterinarian before introducing any new plant material to a cat with gastrointestinal disease, a history of foreign-body ingestion, or a prescribed diet.
3. Tatarian honeysuckle: a studied but variable option
What it is
Tatarian honeysuckle was another attractant evaluated in the 2017 BMC Veterinary Research study. The research supports discussing it as a possible feline scent preference, not as a universally effective or proven-safe supplement. Response depends on the individual cat, the plant material, and how the product is made.
How to use it responsibly
- Prefer a purpose-made toy or clearly labeled dried ingredient rather than garden clippings, which may be misidentified or treated with pesticides.
- Check that the package identifies the plant and lists all added materials.
- Supervise the first session and stop if the cat chews substantial amounts, vomits, develops diarrhea, or becomes unusually sleepy or agitated.
Do not infer that a plant’s name makes an extract, oil, spray, or combination product safe. Concentration, contamination, and added ingredients can change the risk profile, and the cited study does not validate every commercial formulation.

4. Valerian: scent enrichment that may not look like a “high”
Expected behavior
Valerian was also included in the 2017 feline attractant study. Depending on the cat, the response may be active play, rubbing, or little noticeable change. A sedated-looking cat is not necessarily relaxed in a beneficial way; drowsiness after a product can also signal an adverse reaction, especially if the product contains other ingredients.
Safer product choices
If you try valerian, select a toy or product that names the plant and every other ingredient. Avoid human valerian supplements, tinctures, essential oils, alcohol-containing liquids, and blends intended for people. Keep the item away from cats that chew and swallow fabric or plant matter, and ask your veterinarian about interactions if your cat takes medication or has liver, kidney, neurologic, or gastrointestinal disease.

Questions to ask before offering any plant toy
- Is the cat healthy enough for an experiment? Chronic illness, pregnancy, a restricted diet, swallowing problems, or current medication warrants veterinary advice first.
- Can the cat ingest the item? Choose intact toys, supervise chewing, and discard damaged products.
- Are the ingredients identifiable? Avoid unlabeled powders, oils, sprays, extracts, and products that do not disclose additives.
- What is the baseline behavior? A short period of play or rubbing is different from collapse, severe wobbliness, repeated vomiting, breathing trouble, or seizures.
What to do after marijuana, THC, or supplement exposure
Treat suspected cannabis exposure as an urgent veterinary question, even if the cat initially looks normal. Exposure can occur when a cat eats an edible, licks residue, chews a plant, or inhales smoke. Do not wait for a dramatic reaction and do not try to make the cat vomit unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.
- Remove access. Move the product, plant, ash, or spill away from the cat and keep other pets out of the area.
- Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or an animal poison-control service. FDA guidance is to act quickly after a potentially dangerous ingestion. In the United States, ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435.
- Give precise information. Have the package, ingredient list, estimated amount, time of exposure, cat’s weight, and current symptoms available. Tell the clinician whether THC, CBD, alcohol, xylitol, chocolate, or other drugs may be present.
- Transport safely if directed. Keep the cat in a carrier, prevent falls, and do not offer additional food, oils, or home remedies unless instructed.
ASPCA guidance on some hemp/CBD calming-aid overdoses says signs may last 24–72 hours. That is overdose guidance, not a therapeutic duration and not a reason to monitor a symptomatic cat at home without professional advice.
When a veterinarian should help you choose enrichment
Ask your veterinarian before using plant attractants if your cat has seizures, heart or blood-pressure disease, liver or kidney disease, recurrent vomiting or diarrhea, a history of eating non-food objects, or takes sedatives, pain medicines, behavioral drugs, or other supplements. A veterinarian can help distinguish ordinary post-play tiredness from sedation, neurologic disease, or poisoning and can suggest non-ingestible enrichment such as wand play, food puzzles, climbing spaces, scent-free toys, and predictable interactive sessions.
