Classic cutaneous histiocytoma is not an established cat tumor: a peer-reviewed veterinary oncology review says it primarily affects young dogs and has not been identified in cats. But veterinary references do describe other feline tumors with “histiocytic” in the name, including a type of skin mast cell tumor and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Those are distinct conditions, and a lump’s appearance cannot tell you which one—or whether it is a tumor at all.
Can cats get histiocytomas?
The answer depends on what someone means by “histiocytoma.” The classic cutaneous histiocytoma is primarily a tumor of young dogs; a peer-reviewed review says it has not been identified in cats. Merck Veterinary Manual describes two different feline conditions whose names include histiocytic terminology: a histiocytic type of skin mast cell tumor and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. They are not stages or variants of the same disease.

Some consumer veterinary coverage uses “feline histiocytoma” for histiocytic-looking lumps and discusses monitoring or removal. That terminology does not establish that the classic canine cutaneous histiocytoma occurs in cats. The safest approach is to have a veterinarian identify the actual lesion rather than rely on its label or appearance.
Which feline lesions may be meant by “histiocytic”?

These patterns help explain why the same informal name can cause confusion. They are not a way to diagnose an individual cat: a younger Siamese with small lumps could still have another condition, and a lump in an older cat is not automatically malignant.

What causes these lumps?
The veterinary sources cited here do not establish a cause for the feline histiocytic-type skin mast cell tumor or malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Do not assume that a particular exposure, breed, inherited factor, or behavior caused your cat’s lump. Breed and age patterns described for a specific tumor are not proof of cause and should not be applied to other skin masses.
What symptoms should prompt a veterinary visit?
A skin lump can be a tumor, an inflammatory lesion, or another problem, and their appearances can overlap. Arrange a veterinary assessment for a newly noticed lump rather than trying to identify it at home. Seek prompt attention if it is growing, ulcerated, bleeding, irritating your cat, or your cat seems unwell; these are reasons to get an uncertain mass checked, not signs specific to histiocytoma.

- Note when you first noticed the lump and whether it has changed.
- Tell the veterinarian where it is and whether your cat is licking, scratching, or showing discomfort.
- Avoid squeezing, lancing, or applying medication unless your veterinarian directs you to do so.
How does a veterinarian diagnose a cat’s skin lump?
The veterinarian will assess the lump and your cat’s history. Because skin tumors can resemble inflammatory disease, visual inspection alone may not settle what it is. A fine-needle aspiration collects cells for examination; cytology can be a quick, minimally invasive way to evaluate a skin mass and help determine whether more testing or surgery is appropriate.

How are feline histiocytic lesions treated?
Histiocytic-type skin mast cell tumor
Merck notes that some of these lesions resolve spontaneously, so treatment may not be needed in some cases. That possibility is not a reason to assume an untested lump is harmless or to wait a set period at home. A veterinarian should determine whether observation is appropriate for the confirmed diagnosis.
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma
Because this tumor can invade nearby tissue and recur, Merck describes surgical removal with surrounding tissue. The veterinarian can discuss the plan based on the tumor’s location and extent.

Other or uncertain diagnoses
Care depends on what the examination and testing establish. A lump described informally as “histiocytoma-like” should not be managed as though it were a confirmed feline diagnosis, particularly because the classic cutaneous histiocytoma label is not established for cats in the peer-reviewed review.

- Classic cutaneous histiocytoma is primarily a young-dog tumor, and a peer-reviewed review says it has not been identified in cats.
- Feline histiocytic-type skin mast cell tumors and malignant fibrous histiocytomas are separate conditions with different age patterns and behavior.
- A lump’s appearance is not enough to identify it; aspiration/cytology or biopsy/histopathology may be needed.
- Some histiocytic-type mast cell lesions may regress, while malignant fibrous histiocytomas can invade locally and recur. The right response depends on diagnosis.
